I've seen discussions about installation of windshields. I'm close to buying a windshield for my 1955 truck. As many have found no one wants to touch these old trucks. I've got the new rubber for it and at this point I'm starting to think to do it myself. Has anyone done this? what are the tricks? -Thanks
I just did this on my 55. it was really pretty easy.
I bought the butyl and the rope tool from MidFifty (the tool is worth the $16..)
test fit the gasket,
remove the gasket
tape off the cowl with painters tape and serran warp
put a bead of butyl in the gasket (cut the tip small)
install gasket on windshield
run the rope in the groove (I soaked the rope in soapy water for 5 mins)
spray the window opening with soapy water
have your helper help you position the window
while they press, you pull the rope at a 90 degree angle to the flange
(top to bottom)
then with heal of your hand, bump the glass the rest of the way in., to seat the gasket, you will see it slip in..
Took about 30 mins total. 5 mins install, 25 mins prep..
let dry, then clear up the butyl.. I used a good clean razor blades and a rag with wd-40 to get it off the glass.. then glass cleaner to finish.
It has been a year or so ago now, but the local glass shop had 4 windshields in their warehouse for my 56. They would install a new one (new gasket too) for $300.
For that price...I will just let them do it (someday). Of course the price has probably went up by now...just like everything else.
Sounds relatively easy with the help of some extra hands. Do you remember approximatly what windshield weighed? Sounds like you mainly applied sealant to exterior side of gasket. I'm assuming the interior side is "dry" to let rope move thru.
there is a slot in the gasket for the glass, this is where the sealer goes.
then there is a flap where the rope goes, this flap goes over the flange around the window opening.. the rope is used to pull the flap over the flange..
see the MidFifty online catalog for a cross section of the gasket.
The gasket can be difficult to position on the glass, but that is the hardest part. My wife helped me install the glass in my 53, she couldn't look when I started bumping it in with my hand to seat the gasket though.
Brian, let me know when you get ready for glass, I have a source for windshields here that I think I can get the one for a 56 for under $150.
Someday (now where have I heard that before????), I will need a windshield and all the door glass.
The windshield has major scratches from the windshield wiper arms (and is bubbled). The door glass is all bubbled and even chipped in a few places around the edges.
Who knows when someday might get here, but... will keep it in mind
