Alternator?
I just tried to start my 69 F250, (new 390)...it's been sitting ofr awhile (3 weeks)... It won't start with a jump, but will if we hook to the starter direct and by pass the battery...once we unhook the jumper cable it dies...would this mean it's a bad alternator?...how hard easy is it to rebuild?..
Would a super dead battery keep it from running?

I would charge or swap out the battery first. Get it started and see if the alternator is charging. You can get a rebuild kit for the alternator for $13. Is easy to do, have to solder 3 wires.

that was weird, tried to post a thanks and the server went down, any way...sounds like good advise to me... the battery has been dead for a while and the jump was a quickie and might not have been long enough.. thanks

Sounds more like a dirty connection at one or both ends of one or both battery cables - pull them all off & clean them thoroughly. You can get a tool from most parts stores (& maybe Wal-Mart, too) that will clean & resurface the battery terminals so they're the right shape & angle. It looks like a plus sign about 4" across.
