I was told by my local friendly Ford dealer that my front seal leak on my 01 psd/4r100 was caused by a bad converter generating to much heat and causing the seal to distort. Given this is correct, would it be worth it for me to replace the converter and seal on a 91xxx mile 4r100, I seem to remeber hearing when the tranny goes, it will take the converter with it. Now I have no reason to beleive my tranny is on the way out other than its bad reputation for longevitiy. It shifts good, just a little flare on the 3rd to o/d shift. If I had the money laying around I would just put a tranny in it, buuuuuttt...... I dont.. Any thoughts?
1) $300+- For reman converter. Pump Bushing & seal kit was something like $80. New filter and oil .Well they have to pull tranny anyways. Mine was about $650 Total. Been fine and pulling great.
2) Probably half of that for not replacing converter. $325.
3) Do yourself + Friend+ this forum, probably 4/6 hours and $80.
Torgue Converter $300.
4) If you looking for heavy duty long lasting, Well it is going to cost Bookoo Bucks. And others can say what that will cost.
And finally a TruCool install $150.
That is about as cheap as it gets. For a stock truck that don't pull that much (3 or 4 times a year 10klbs camper)and less than 8k Total miles a year. I went with #1. My converter was rattle noisy and bugging the crap out of me. Was working ok though. So i had no choice except #1. #3,well i have no friends hehe.. It was really, had no time.
Can't tell you which way to go. I probably would take #1 if i was you. But i don't know your money situation. And from my recent experience this was the exact decision i had to make. And my money it tight now a days.
How much is it to have the converter replaced. I would upgrade the TC if I was going to be in there anyway probably with a BTS or John Wood unit.
BTW, did you do a lot of backing up with a heavy load? That will generate a lot of heat and distort that seal.
They quoted me $750 for the converter, seal, fluids and install. I would be fine with that If I could feel confident that I would see some life out of the tranny, but thats a crap shoot I know.
Are the high dollar converters really worth it for a guy like me who has a stock truck(DP in the future)and really doesnt tow anything over 7k a few times a year?My luck I would throw in a $1100 PI and fill it full of metal shavings and friction material 10 miles down the road!! I hate the way my stock converter feels, almost like it has too much stall, but I dont know if it supposed to be this way or because it is in need of replacement..
Too answer your second question, it puked the first time driving in town, no load, stop and go, 92 degree ambient, 180 degrees tranny temp(Autometer guages) The other two times were loaded with about 3500 pounds of retaining wall stone + 1700 pound trailer, open road, 55 mph, 180 temp again. Really aggrevating, my SD, SHE AINT SO SUPER
