Window crank escutcheons

Now there's an exciting topic you may not have seen in a while. Thanks for looking anyway. I was in the Ocala, Fl. branch of NPD yesterday and picked up some door and window handles and escutcheons. Problem is, my rather thick upholstery (changing it this summer, don't cringe) prevents the escutcheon from being pushed on far enough to allow the clip that holds the handle on from engaging the slot it fits into. Have any of you encountered this, and how did you get around it? If I force the handle on and somehow manage to get the clip inserted, all the pressure from said handle will damage my new stainless escutcheon. (who came up with that name??)

Jim,
I had a similar problem when doing my 53 a long time ago. If I remember correctly, you can insert the spring clip on the handle and then pop the handle onto the shaft. That may allow you to get it together, but it won't fix you damaged escrotchunz.
I ended up leaving them off.
Good Luck,

On my 54, I had the same problem. I had to buy the extended crank shafts from Mid-Fifty. They are about 1/4" longer than the stock units. Tell Sy that I said hi. If you try anything shy of extending the shafts, you will have nothing but trouble. So, bite the bullet and order them now. (I seem to recall that they are 10-15 dollars a piece.) Jag

Jag, I called MF today. Diane said that the longer extensions are a NIGHTMARE to install, and actually advised against buying them, they're that tough. She said there was a lot of small pieces in the reulator assembly, aside from having to remove the assembly. How was your experience? 17$ each. New regulators- 93$ each. Leaving the escutcheons off- priceless.

The parts houses used to sell acessory shaft extensions just for ths problem. They are ~ 1" long and slip over the original shaft where they are secured with a set screw. The other end matches the stock handles. Mine came with a set of them in place, I'll have to see how many of them I can still find in my extra parts boxes.

Escutcheon (pronounced [ɪ'skʌtʃən]) (also called scutcheon) is the term used in heraldry for the shield displayed in a coat of arms. An inescutcheon is a smaller escutcheon borne within a larger escutcheon.

Now, why they use it for our purposes, is beyond me...

Had the opportunity of visitng the NDP parts warehouse in Ocala mid May .If you are building any vehicle they supply parts for that is a dangerous thing to do if you have any amount of $$ in your pocket .The owners powder blue '56 panel in the showroom is a work of art .

Raerjim, They are not hard to do. I remember
1. drilling out three rivets
2. Removing a cap the size of a silver dollar.
3. Replacing the shaft and lock spring.
4. Lube
5. Install three bolt/nuts to replace the rivets.

That's my memory from three years ago, so I hope I haven't forgotten something. I don't think you'll have a problem. Please take progress pix so that others can see how easy it was for you. Jag

WOW--I have a ranch about 8 miles from NPD and was there in May/June and didn't see a 56 there. I saw the mustang, and camaro, and others but where was the 56? I was there for 5 hours loading my trailer and wish I saw it. I live way too close, and spend too much moola there, anyway. Up north now---too bad that 56 and I didn't meet--haha!!!1 Bill

Denny and Bill, next time your in there, ask if you can see the collection in the back of the warehouse. There are forty something MINT cars of all descriptions back there. ( all stock) I saw the finest VERY black 56 T bird in there with 4000 miles on it Wednesday. There are several NOS? vehicles in there with a few hundred miles on them. Trans Ams, Baldwin Motion Camaros, 57 Belairs, the finest GT 500 KR Shelby Mustang anywhere, a 72 F-100 with stickers still on the glass and 200 miles on it, and the list goes on... Ax, plz let me know if you find those. Jag, I assume the regulator assembly has to come out? I was hoping for a quick and easy fix, but you know how that goes..

Talking

I believe as many things as I have fabricated over the years I could weld a square piece of stock on the shaft and cut it to length and drill another hole. Good luck.
