I am new to the big block scene and just picked up myself a 68 F-250 with a 390.
Now I am not trying to build a race truck or anything, just something fun to drive around.
I am wondering if anyone has a build like what I am looking for before I go ahead and spend tons of money experimenting, so if you have an advise it'd be much appreciated.
Now what I am looking for is preferably a camming engine (I know it's terrible to want it just for the sound but why not right?), nice sounding exhaust, doesn't have to be a monster on HP as I'd be plenty happy in the 300-350 area, or maybe even less, this truck will just be a cruiser that I can bring out to the shows and car lots. Want to try to keep it somewhat managable on the MPG (I know I have an FE, thats not easy)
So anything you guys might have to offer up it'd help me out greatly!
Thanks!
EDIT: Sorry the title is a little misleading, my 'y' key doesn't work all the time our = your
Welcome to the world of FE's. There have been quite a few 390 builds on here, so there should be plenty of reading material and ideas for you. Sounds like you want the "baddest sounding engine in the lot", but decent fuel mileage for a 390. Most likely not doable, but I wish you luck in your quest.

Sure it is Larry.. Pick up a streetable cam with some lope to it and spend the rest of your $ on some bad azz exhaust then tune it to the T

No way don't want the baddest sounding in the lot, I already have a car to wake the neighbors up with everytime I start it. I just want the truck to sound good and be driveable.
well what i did with mine was put in some 10-1 pistons speed pro .030 over an edelbrock carb and intake with a 260H cam from crane it had lifters with it but if you want more low end grunt for towin and put ya back in the seat get a 268 it sounds good but its nt too radical of a cam but mines in a 76 highboy and im pushin around some heavy 35s and they definitly take some power to turn the mpg is around 11 or 12 highway but thats partly me cause ya gotta see what itll do right but if you want some serious power i would punch it out to a 428 or go with a 410 i not sure of the hp on my motor but its probly arond 300 or so
for some reason havin 10-1 pistons made my truck louder i have 2 1/2 duals with some mufflers i cut off a junk truck i have not sure the brand but it sounds mean
Well for starter How's many miles are on your stock 390....and what kind of money do you have to throw in a build?? Those F250's weight alot as I have a 70 thats been on a major diet..and is still a pig as far as weight goes... Check and see which heads you have on your motor? intake # ect.....
I just went thru this with a guy that wanted to change cams with the motor still in the truck.. Altho I havent heard back from him yet????
Honestly I have no clue how many miles and even if it's a 390 for sure.
The guy seemed pretty honest with the truck, telling me that it was an original 360, but now it's a 390. I think he got a rebuild on the trans and engine and ended up putting a 390 roatating assembly into the engine, though like I said, no way to confirm that.
I figure for now I can do the bolt-ons and get the truck running/sounding better, then once I have the time I'll try to go out and pickup another engine for a fresh rebuild. I at least want the truck running so I can drive it around while I am doing all the painting, prepping and a lot of the work on the body thats getting done. I'd really like to know whats in the engine but only way that'll happen is if I take it apart, and honestly, since it's running great right now I don't want to do that.

Thanks for the advise..I will deffinately be considering the cam options you just gave me!
then i would probly go with the 260H its a good cam itll have good power in the truck you have if you dont have big tires like mine does my dads buddy built one not sure of all the details like cam but he said that he could pull a 25 foot speed boat up parleys canyon out here at 60 or 65 easy the canyons pretty steep theres always people with their huge camp trailers and new duramaxes and cummins overheated on the side of the road cause they try to pullem at 80mph with a trailer i like to drive by and laugh at em while drivin my old 76
I am in Illinois, so no mountains here just tons of highway driving. Though it'll likely have to trailor my other car out to tracks every so often, so a little extra power is always good to have.
yeah it does the 260h is supposedly a truck pullin cam but thats what it says on the box any ways for me i would prefer the 268 just cause i have to push around the big tires just curious is yours 2 or 4wd

Mine is 2wd otherwise there'd be no questions about keeping it.
I live in Chicago and may be moving to Montana, so having a 2wd truck does me almost no good half the year.
I may raise the truck a bit, but I don't think it'll see any larger tires.
youll be fine with a 260h then i live in utah and we see some pretty bad winters here if that truck has limited slip then it would be ok in the snow but you probly want the 4wd just to be safe
