differences between my 2 86's...strange

hi all been a long while since i have posted.i have somehow became very fond of an 86 F150 2wd that i bought a couple of years ago and decided to pick up an old 4x4 beater to save my "ole blue machine".ole blue is the 2wd 86 F150with factory tach and gauges .now its optioned kinda strange.86 was the first year for EFI and it was optional.my truck has its factory EFI 5.0 engine but it also appears to have a 9 inch rearend and i believe the old style granny 4 speed.now the other truck i just drug in is also an 86 and its 4wd.whats odd here is the granny 4 speed is different in it.it has different shift gates and the shifter itself is different from the one in ole blue.also the 4x4 appears to have an 8.8 inch rearend under it,no factory tach in it and its carbed.anybody have any idea about why the two trucks came with different rear axles and different granny 4 speed transmissions?im about positive they are both original.my brother had an 85 F350 4x4 with the same transmission as the one in my project 4x4.jim

Ford offered 3 different 4 speed transmissions in those model years.

A quick search would have told you this info.

Ford was and is constantly changing things through the years, and even during the middle of the year. The 8.8 was phased in because it doesn't have as much drag as the the 9 inch, so fuel economy is helped out a little bit.

If you hang around here awhile, you will find out everyone is different, and they want their own personalized truck, with the combination of components they think will work for them(whether it really does or not). Ford and the other OEM's try to fill this want by offering several engines and tranny combinations, as well as trim and other options to try to sell the most trucks without making too difficult to build them.

thanks Dave.i i am pretty familar with the ins and outs of these old trucks but mostly 70's and back.i really like the way my old 2 wd is set up and how it feels/runs/drives.i just thought it is kinda "cool" the way it has all the "good stuff" IMHO.i am curious through.will the starters swap on my two different 4 speeds? will the clutch and pressure plate swap between the two trans?i just traded a running 87 F150 larriete for this broken down 86 4x4,.just didnt like the feel of the newer style truck, too car like.over the years i have owned a boat load of old fords (and new).i was a nut about the hi boy F250'S and went thru several, then years later i bought a new power stroke dually.but i guess im old and stubborn because i refused to get interested in the newer ones to figure out all the ins and outs of them,so i guess i will start that process now with these two.the 4x4 i will replace the engine in and it will become my main work truck and ole blue is going in the garage for some r&r (restoration and repair).im rambling now.the bottom line of my rant is im sure i be looking for lots of info over the next several months.

Go somewhere like Online Auto Parts and Auto Accessories Store at PartsAmerica.com and plug in both model trucks, and put in flywheels and clutches, and see if they have the same part numbers.

just didnt like the feel of the newer style truck, too car like.
See what I mean. Some people will complain about the rough ride some of the trucks have.

Bailey, where are you from? I work at a dealership here in Plainfield and we have an 86 in here with Ol' Blue on the back of it. I think it was in there today.

I honestly have to support Uncle Stosh on this one; how else can people see that
perhaps they can find the answers to their questions by searching through past
postings and looking at what others have asked/replied with in the past? This is the
power of the Internet and forums such as this; people here are volunteers and do this
for free, nobody is paid to offer information & advice to others.

I don't think he was testy or rude at all, he spoke quite appropriately here.

Where, you ask? Near the top of every forum is what some people would call a
toolbar - User CP, FAQ, Members List...Search... Use the Advanced Search to limit in
which forums the search is performed, you can even specify from whom you wish to
see posts if you so wish. This might be listed in an FAQ somewhere or maybe I just
picked it up somewhere, but put a plus sign before each term you wish to search on.
Ex:

+EGR + feedback +carburetor

Using the + sign will show results where all of those words are present; without the +
signs, you'll get results where any of those words are present.

hi ct.the issue here is threefold.first off forums are just that, where people post back and forth for info or just to talk about their toys.now i answer alot of questions in other forums and i expect it because im a member of the forum and enjoy sharing my knowledge.at the same time not being vary familar with this site and being very busy but having specific questions i thought maybe someone friendly and knowledgeble would share the answers.i do plan to start spending more time and learning the site.now i know we try very hard at most forums im invovled with to keep new members and we treat them well and then i guess im old and from the woods so im outdated maybe but im a very polite person to everyone until they show me i shouldnt be.ct if you dont think you should both with a post, please dont, others who want to post a reply and dont mind answering (whether it could have been found with a search or not) will come along and post comments or answers.its better i have learned to not answer a post unless unless you have the answer or a comment to make the poster smile.everybody stays happy and the forum grows.thanks for listening,ct

BaileyBuilt Seems that Ford like mixing things up until they run out of parts from the previous year Take for example 86 wasn't the first year for Fuel Injection 85 is and they were mixed up same as 86.My 85 F150is a factory 5.0 (302) FI with a AOD trans and a 8.8 rear with 3.55 gears and rides better than my wife's wagon which is a year newer. If you ever have to pull one of these engine for a rebuild cause the wiring harness will drive you crazy if you don't label it which we did.Hope this helps

thanks Cliff,it sure seems they did mix it up and i thought jeep was the one for that.i had to swap engines in our wrangler and boy no two jeep parts were the same.thanks for the wiring harness info also, when i replace the clutch this winter in the 86 5.0 EFI F150 i think im gonna go thru the engine so i will certainly label everything.this one is one of the tightest least noisey old fords i have ever owned...and i spend a lot of time telling passengers "dont slam the doors, fords close easy, not hard like the old chevy's".dont seem to work though, maybe i need to have "please close me gently"custom stenciled on the doors.lol

I'm going to say this, and then I'm going to let it go for good. Maybe even this site.

When I first started looking for info on my truck I found this site. I searched and read through hundreds of posts before I even bothered to join or ask a question AFTER searching every post I could find.

Doing some leg work does wonders for accumulating knowledge about not only your specific truck, but other trucks of the same vintage and you may also learn something that you didn't know.

Most every question that I've seen posted here lately has been answered numerous times, and to be honest I'm sick of seeing the same stuff over and over again.

Now, you may say "if you don't like it, then don't reply". Yes, that is the easy answer and from now on that's what I'm going to do. Not reply.

I personally have done my home work, and it's getting to the point where everyone just wants to come here and post a question that would take about 2-3 minutes to find an answer for. You guys that keep answering these same questions over and over again are only making matters worse.

I frequent a LOT of other forums, and you'd be flamed in a heart beat for NOT using the search feature and no body will answer your questions period.

If you guys have the time and want to keep talking about the same crap, then knock your self out. People these days are always looking for the easy way out, and they want everything handed to them.

How many times do we have to see, what body panels fit which year trucks, which transmission do I have, which rear end gears do I have, what do I need to do to put 44" tires on an F150, blah, blah, blah.

I'm done with it........... and I'm not going to let the door hit me in the *** either.

Ladies and gentleman: uncle.stosh has left the building.
