gas leak

1985 ext cab longbed f150 IL6 4wd 4 sp std

when I fill the tank or close to fill it, theres a really severe gas leak, looks like I lose anywhere from a half gallon or so....
Ive been told its either a plug valve or the O ring for the sending unit?
tank was a fairly new instalation.
could these be correct, and is this something Id be better off removing the bed to fix?

It could be the sending unit or the evap. cannister feed line, both on the top of the tank. You could have a crack in the tank as well. The only way you can check is to drop the tank and get a look at the top. It will be easier to drop the tank rather than lift the bed althought some people do that.

It would be real simple to just not fill it 'clear up', don't ya' think? Especially with fuel prices so high

I prefer taking the bed off so you can have access with everything hooked up and driveable. It's a PITA either way.
