OK, so I got the tank issues resolved and just got some of the money I gave the government back, so I am thinking about a new carb for the old girl. Rebuilding seems to be more than I can take on right now (mostly time related) and since I have some extra money, replacing just seemed like a good idea, especially given the state of the carb! To refresh your memories, she's an '84 F150, 351 HO with a Holley 1850 4bbl. Here's the carb:
A while back, someone (Franklin, I think) mentioned the bowl vent and how I was missing a line or something. Looking at this pic, can you tell me what that was and where it goes or comes from?
Also, someone posted a link to a site that had a dang good price on a new carb exactly like this one (I am almost positive they said it was an 1850 Holley), but I can't seem to find it. I am leaning towards replacing it if I can find that link again, but thought I might try to fixt the bowl vent issue in the mean time.
I'm not an expert on carbs, but I have the exact same truck. Mine came with a 4180c, which looks exactly like yours except for the bowls. The 4180c has vent tubes in both the front and rear bowls, which are part of the emissions control system. Yours appears to only have on on the rear bowl. Again, I'm not an expert, but I'm wondering if it's possible that you have a "frankenstein" carb, that is someone switched out a bowl, possibly the front one. Was/is your truck emissions equipped with the air pump adn EGR valve? What I do know is that the hose from the bowl vent tube should go down near the passenger side fender to a charcoal canister that's mounted there. This is supposed to absorb evaporated gas. On my truck there are two canisters, one for each bowl.
Not sure if it was "frankensteined" or not, but it wouldn't surprise me. Mine has the canister and I will check to see if the line off of the back bowl goes there. Air pump had not been connected and was locked up, so I took it off altogether WAY back when I first got it. It looked as if it had been disconnected a LONG time ago, so a pieced together carb wouldn't surprise me at all. I only have one canister, though.
The two larger hoses #2 with the plastic connected inline are for the bowl vents. There should be a vacuum diagram at front of truck under hood, looks like #3 connect to vacuum modulator. I'm not sure about #1. Fixing the bowl vent deal will require a 4180 Holley. The bowls are different on the 4160.
Thanks guys. I am just about convinced I am going to replace it. Jegs has a good remanufactured Holley 600 cfm for a little over $230 and a new one for $280, both with the electric choke like mine, so it is hard to beat that.
