wiring harness are not the same

I got into the harness trouble today and now have three that are not the same, you can look at each and the color code is not as shown in the diagrams. my harness on the 77 has developed a over heated resister wire red green stripe and I went to my 76 to begin the stripping proses and the junction wires are brown and red/grn. I have had a standard in the 77 from the factory so A neutral start switch I cant find, the other two had automatic transmission's so rather then go threw all the trouble I thought I might just replace the bad wire with the donor from my old 76. might take some time but I have the replace ment out so tomorrow I will start the installment of the donor. maybe after this job is done I will have spark at the coil.

The brown goes to the "i" terminal of the starter relay. Later on they moved this function to the ignition switch. You are realizing a slow progression of updates and changes from the factory year by year.

Get a testlight and hook the ground end to the engine block. With the key in run, you should have voltage on the + of the coil. When you crank the engine, you should still have voltage on the + of the coil, and you should be able to move the probe over on the negative terminal of the coil, and the testlight should blink.

If it's not blinking, and the module is good, then I would suspect the pickup in the dist.

Here's some tests I got off autozone's site;

To test the stator (also known as the magnetic pickup assembly), you will need an ohmmeter. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature, then turn the ignition switch to the off position. Disconnect the wire harness from the distributor. Connect the ohmmeter between the orange and purple wires. Resistance should be 400-800?. Next, connect the ohmmeter between the black wire and a good ground on the engine. Operate the vacuum advance either by hand or with an external vacuum source. Resistance should be 0?. Finally, connect the ohmmeter between the orange wire and ground, and then purple wire and ground. Resistance should be over 70,000? in both cases. If any of your ohmmeter readings differ from the above specifications, then the stator is defective and must be replaced as a unit.

today I had the ignition module checked out and it game back bad, it was a napa unit I got just before we parked the truck, one of my old units that had the four prong connector broke check OK, I put it on and got spark, though not as hot as I would like to see but the bat was not as hot as it should be, to much cranking,it hit once or twice but still no big bang. will keep you posted. ps I vacuumed the fuel line and got a mass of rust out of the fuel tank feed line and a good flow that might help get fuel into the carburetor, this might help to. I haven't had enough cranking time to prime the system yet, its all fresh and dry, what little I pour into the carb is not enough to light it off. JNT
