Fuel Mileage

Mileage Statistics
I drive my F-250 across Florida and back almost every weekend. It's interstate type highways almost all the way and, like most of Florida, is pretty flat (the only hills are overpasses). I've had some time to play with speeds and mileage and here are the results, with the truck empty:
75 MPH = 15.0 MPG
70 MPH = 17.8 MPG
65 MPH = 19.5 MPG
60 MPH = 21.9 MPG
Pulling an 8000 pound Travel Trailer at 65, mileage goes to 11.6. Interestingly, pulling my 4000 pound boat, the mileage goes to 12.2 (no explanation for why it is that low)
When the DPF regen kicks in, I lose about 0.5 MPG for the whole 360 mile trip. If it regens twice during a trip, which sometimes happens, I lose 1 MPG.

I sold a 2000 F350 with7.3 and not sure it was the right thing to do. I really like my 2008 but Im not sure how long I can go at 7 and 8 mpg. I just filled up and only got 7.2 mpg on my last tank. That was in town and no towing. We leave for a 2000 mile trip this week and the fuel is going to kill me. Ive been a Ford guy forever but this might do me in.

I agree something is wrong with the truck the problem is 2 dealers and Ford customer service say as long as the mpg is above 5 mpg the truck is ok. Ive said I was getting 12 mpg empty and 10 mpg towing my trailer and would be happy with what I was getting. The truck quit running and had to be towed to a dealer and since then I cant get above 8 mpg empty. We read on here about a software update or flash that was something to do with mpg and took it to the dealer but Ford said the truck wasnt giving any codes and thy wouldnt let the dealer do the upgrade. So now I got a great looking and great riding truck that I know has a problem but I cant get it fixed.

If you can find the TSB for mileage on here, go in to the dealership with the symptoms and they should do it for you. If not, just go to a random dealership.

JAY2008 the truck isnt stuck in regen. Actualy that is the only thing the dealer fixed. Before the truck qit it would go into regen all the time. It just did it yesterday and I got it from the dealer July 14.
My friend has a 2008 also but his has the 4:10 rear and mine is 3:73. We just drove from Pompano beach Florida to Memphis Tennn and he averaged 7.6 mpg and I averaged 7.7 mpg. This was over 2 days and 6 fillups. We are both towing 13000 lb Cardinal fifth wheels. The best mpg I got was 8.4 and that was in the worst section of road with lots of hills.

Just filled up for our trip to Chattanooga and after running around Memphis for 3 days the truck got 12 mpg. It used to get this without the trailer but since it broke down it just hasnt been right. Im leaving in the morning so Ill see what happens with the trailer now. I dont know what to think of the mpg being off so bad. Also Ford said I cant trust the on board computor to tell me how far I can go on fuels or the mpg and the fuel gauge also is off. On one fill up the gauge said I had 1/2 tank but the truck truck took 29 gallons. Hopefully the mpg will get closer together so Ill know how far I can go.

Ok just got back from my trip almost 1000 miles most of the miles pulling a 21' travel trailer. I got 12.2 mpg over that period. pulling on the highway with the cruise set to 75 and then some around town stuff.. this was out in the hill country so there was alot of hills. I am pretty happy with the results. After reading alot of post from people getting 7-9 pulling a trailer ... I only have about 1800 miles on the truck and not one complaint yet..

funny you should ask.
i used to have a 2000, f350 psd, crew cab, lariat, short bed, 4x4 and traded it in on a 2008.
i just got back from my trucks first long distance trip, pretty much mty WITHOUT towing. i have a 2008 f350, psd, crew cab, lariat, 4x4, dually, with the 3.73 ls axle. i also have a bed cover on it. i left northern arizona enroute to san diego with 1621 miles. here are my results :
-topped off the tank with 20 gallons and re-set my in dash mpg guage. i then drove to san diego. i drove very conservatively. 67-68 mph downhill and on the level parts, keeping the turbo boost at 10 or under. uphill, 60-65 mph keeping the turbo boost at no more than 20. i never exceeded 70 mph or 2000 rpms (yea, it sucked to do that). this is radically different from the way i drove my 2000 f350 (70-75mph with the mpg guage usually at 15.5 mpg's). when i parked at the hotel, my in dash mpg meter read 16.0 mpgs for that leg of the trip.
-the next day, i filled up the tank with 24 gallons. i then did a bunch of city driving before driving up the coast to the los angeles area. after a 2 day stay in the los angeles area i headed easbound back to northern arizona. i stopped for fuel east of barstow, ca at a truck stop. before i filled up with 20 gallons, my in dash mpg guage read 15.6 mpgs for that leg of the trip. after filling up with fuel, i reset the in dash mpg guage and continued e/b back home.
-upon my arrival at home when i parked in my driveway, the in dash mpg guage read 15.2 mpgs for the last leg of my trip.
i drove 926 miles on the trip and averaged 59.9 mph (city and highway driving). overall, the mpg's weren't that bad (between 15-16 mpg's) but you have to keep the boost around 10 (except uphill) and rpms below 2000 when you can. driving a little slower was worth it for me as this truck was great to drive. very comfortable and stable on the road. unless some warranty problems arise, i will be very pleased with the purchase of this truck.........

I just bought my 2008 (leased actually) ext. cab 4x4 over the weekend. So far I am getting 15 in town / 18 on the highway (60-70MPH).
Bought at Woodhouse in Blair, NE (Good people there, take good care of me) and they said there was a new computer update out that has improved fuel economy. Also I have heard that the engine needs to be broke in to really start performing. Maybe 15k miles?

Mine is a job 3 bought in June 08. Empty, being very conservative, coasting a lot, gradual acceleration, etc I have gotten 14. Drive "normal" and I get 12-13. I tow a 28 ft enclosed car trailer, about 10k pounds, drive 2 lane roads at 65 mph and get 7.5-8.5
I understand how those with DPF delete are getting good mpg but I cant figure how stock trucks are getting 18-19. I read an old article in Diesel Power Magazine that did a comparison between the 6.4 and the V10 and they were claiming 15 mpg while towing and 19 empty. Their mpg towing is better than mine empty. Hmmm sounds like a Darrell Waltrip story.
