Regen?

Ok so I have done the search and can't find what it is. So what is a Regen? Is it bad? Good? How often should it do this? Will I notice when it does?
I have found hundreds of threads with the word regen in them but gave up after a long while.

Regen is where extra fuel is injected to burn out the soot in the DPF.
It is required to clean the DPF. Someone decided it was a good idea to burn more fuel to clean the air. Go figure
You may notice the regen when it happens you may not notice, depends on when it happens and what job # truck you have. The Job 3 have it show up in the message center that it is cleaning the DPF or something like that. The job #1 doesn't have that message.
Regen may be noticed if your truck is idling in park, as a higher idle and if you feel the exhaust when the high idle ocurrs it will be very hot. On the highway you may or may not notice the regen happen it may cause the truck to stumble when you try to pass, or a lower boost in the gauges. If you pull on the highway with the truck it may not go into regen as often as the exhaust is hotter and cleans the soot out of the DPF.
How often depends on driving habits, city/highway driving.
That is my understanding of regen it may not include everything but in a nutshell I think that is it

It's funny, they REALLY don't go into regen at all under HEAVY loads (in my case, GCVW 32,000 - 35,500). I've been able to reconize all the regens I've had in 19,000 miles and towing heavy this last week I've had NONE.

I have a job #1 6.4 L PSD truck with 33.000 kilometers on it. I have only noticed Regen once and then only by noticing the 1200 RPM idle which went to 800 RPM when brake pedal was pushed.

Last week I had the PCM reflash done as per TSB 07-17-3 . One of the additions to the Message center is "Cleaning Exhaust Filter". Yesterday on the highway I saw this message. I would have never know it was in Regen without the new message update installed.
