I jsut got my truck last week and had to leave town. But, It seems like when I step on the fuel peddle that it lags big time. I drive a Diesel for work so I know that it isn't a Dragster but when I test drove the Dodge it broke loose when I hit the gas. After a second or two it will take off but makes it rough pulling into traffic. Yes I know I have a warrenty and will take into the shop when I get home. Just thought I would ask here and see if there were any ideas.
I am no engineer or engine deign expert, but I think the lag is built in for a very good reason. With a waste gate turbo, boost is instant, and could put some unnecessary instant torque on the drive train.
Did you not drive it before you bought it? Seems something like a turbo lag complain on a week old truck was something that you should have asked about before you bought it.
I'm guessing the Dodge you drove was a diesel too? I'm not up on the sequential turbo design, but the first one is supposed to help with the low end boost to prevent turbo lag. What rear end gearing do you have, and what did the Dodge have that you test drove?
The turbo is not going to build boost until you put a load on it. Revving the motor in nuetreal won't give you any boost. Rev the motor with your foot on the brake and you should build some boost to assist in your take off. Boost isn't instant, but is improved with a wastegate. You've got to get the compressor wheel moving to start generating boost pressure.
Let us know what the dealer says when you take it in. Just make sure you find a dealer that has some good diesel tech's. You don't want to end up somewhere that just plugs it into the computer and says there are no codes so everything is OK.
With our 08 F450 4x4 4.88 geared ambulance at work, there is very little go power from a pedal mash. Then after about 1 to 1.5 seconds the turbo needle basicly pegs and you're out of there.
We also have an 03 F550 Crew Cab 4x4 4.88 hazmat truck that is very heavily loaded. It has the 6.0 and only has 2200 miles on it. Not 22,000 , but 2200 actual miles. It has much more off idle response than the 6.4.
I've also noticed that the 6.0 seems to pull harder, but it much less refined and seems peakier than the 6.4.
The 7.3 is awesome off idle, but winds out pretty quickly at speed.
That's just my observations from driving a ton of SDs over my fire and public works carreers.
I agreethat the 6.0 liter has more power. i am really dissappointed in the 6.4 even though I have had no mechanical issues with it yet although my tranny was acting weird this weekend going over the pass. Ford softened everything up in the suspension and now I am beginning to think I should have bought a dually instead of a SRW. If I had known this I would have bought a chevy. My 2004 had no issues towing and hauling without a chip but my 6.4 has turbo lag, which the small turbo was supposed to get rid of, can't haul as much of a load and quite frankly is still not comfortable inside the cab so why bother softening the springs. I am not sure if Ford is going to make it but putting this turd out is not helping.
Wow I insult the Ford and finally get some responses. I have posted this thread on 3 boards.
So yes I test drove it but by then I had driven so many and I bought two trucks while in there that I think I had been in too many trucks that day. I think it started bothering me more as I drove it.
I live in Vegas so I have a big choice in dealerships to take it to.
I think it bothers me more since I had to park it after one weekend and go back to work.
I do appreciate the comments.
I bought aF150 a couple years ago and the AC went out within 150 miles. I may be just looking for what is going to break before I hit a 1000 miles.
If it weren't for the trucks great looks, I would have to say I would have bought something else. I still get a lot of comments and people stating what a beautiful truck and I am not sure that would be the same if it were a chevy or Dodge. My buddy has an 08 dodge and he is not impressed with it either. Poor mileage and his 03 had more power. So to say that would have been a better choice, I would have to say not. Chevy seems to have it down with the tranny and engine combo but I just couldn't stand the thought of driving a truck that looked like a two wheel drive.
Turbo lag is not the problem here. It's all in the programming, and the electronic throttle control. I guess Ford didn't want things to start flying when someone mashed the "go" peddle under a heavy load. Kinda makes sense, but I'd rather have the "juice" and control the throttle/power myself.

Well as adults who shell out upwards to $50K for a truck we can't be trusted with that much power.
It's sorta like having a wife!
I have had the same problem with my f-250. At first i found that you are better off slowly pressing the peadel. I put afe intake and RBP exaust and 4.10 Gears and it has helped it a lot but it is still there a little bit. I am curious what the dealer has to say about it so let us know.
