With the rising cost of gas these days, I was wondering if anyone out there had considered finding used parts or wrecking yard parts and converting a full size F150 to either hybrid or full electric. I am actually considering converting mine to run on natural gas. That way I can refuel it at home with a compressor kit that hangs on the wall of my garage. But it would be even cooler if I could convert it to a CNG/Electric hybrid. Then by going to all synthetic fluids and lubricants, I could pretty much tell the oil companies where to go. I know that there are other things that come from oil, but I want to minimize it.
If you find out, I would be interested to know. I saw a show on TV not that long ago that converted a pickup truck but what I remember was it was BIG money to do it.

Na, not really though...
I saw a 1992-96 style F-150 4x2 on ebay not too long ago, with the hybrid conversion sell for UNDER $4000.
I'm not sure what drivetrain they put in that F150, but GM's hybrid tahoe doesn't get nearly that kind of mileage. I'm sure that any true hybrid drivetrain would cost a whole lot more than $4000.
I am involved in a hybrid project like you're talking about with three other guys, and while it's spread out across three garages and a body shop at the moment, I'm happy to share some of our ideas and decisions along the way and maybe that will help you out a bit. While not a "Ford" project it is a dually crewcab so hopefully FTE won't mind my posting about it later on today or tomorrow when I have more time - as you can choose a Ford as your platform if you wish. We chose the Dodge because it was ridiculously cheap and after selling off the unnecessary bits the project actually has some funding available for purchasing what is necessary as we progress.
Anyway, have to jet, I'll subscribe to the thread and post later on as I have time... give me a day or two and feel free to nudge me if I forget....
