223 carb question

I have two engine. Both have single bbl's. How should carb mount? One had washers stacked on top of studs? The other had gaskets stacked on bottom.? Why are the studs so long on the intake? What am I missing?

I'm assuming the washers are not the way. It looked a little shade tree to me. Not that theres anything wrong with shade trees. (107 deg. in Sacramento)
Which way o-gurus ? Thanks

On my 223, there is a spacer about one-half an inch thick between the carb and the intake manifold. Looks to be stock gasket material. P.S. that temp. is one of the reasons we got the heck out of Modesto.

Check my gallery, you might be able to make the spacer out.

My 215 with the single barrel 1904 Holley sits on top of a thin gasket on top of the 1/2" thick (or so) gasket. Bolted on with nuts and not washers.

By the way, you should have stayed in AK...sunny and 70's today!
