I want to make sure I got this right. For a building TQ in a 5.0L, I need longtube headers, single 2.5 exhaust, & a Comp Cams 35-351-8. Anything else that I have forgotten? Thanks for your help.
That cam is a bit much for a 5.0, better suited to a 5.8. Do you have mass air?
I seem to remember the Comp 35-510-8 produced some impressive numbers in desktop dyno, but I don't remember if I was looking at 5.0's or 5.8's at the time, I'll give it another look over the weekend when I get a chance.
Don't have experience with the SD systems on the trucks but if they react like the SD did on my 87 GT to a cam swap anywhere near the effort of doing (in my stang's case it was to an E303..supposed to be the most compatable with SD)..you will want to change over to mass air. Head changes, headers, even intake, TB, etc can be done without majorly upsetting the system, but once a cam swap is done, I guess the computer gets an inferiority complex and acts like a spoiled kid doing the vehicle equivalent of temper tantrums....poor, poor idle, way rich (burn your eyes) idle...dying at intersections, hanging idle, etc. You will be miles ahead doing the conversion in terms of throttle response, driveability and fuel mileage so you can really enjoy the other goodies. Let me know how it works out for you...am playing with ideas for my 95 5.0 F150 (already factory MA) with the same goals you have and have determined that a 351 swap is out.
That's in general, but duration is tied to LSA and this cam has pretty short duration so it works out overall. It's on the list of cams that reportedly work well with SD EFI, but if you are nervous about using it you won't give up a lot by going with the 35-349-8.
