4cyl 4x4

Years ago I had an 85 Ranger 2.3 4x4. The truck consitantly got 24-25mpg. Now my question is how long did ford have the 4cyl 4x4 option and what kind of mileage did the newer ones get. I have a one ton for when I really need a truck and drive my Lumina when I don't. My Lumina only gets 26-27mpg and I really don't like using the tonner for hunting, pulling my fishing boat, and picking up a couple bags of calf feed. If a newer Ranger would get close to the same mileage as my old one I may get one. Yes I need 4x4, I farm and hunt and a 2wd is worthless to me.

They made the 4x4 4 cylinder option from 84-97, but they can be hard to find in the newer ones. Everyone wanted the V-6 and that lead to the demise of the 4 banger 4x4. I don't know the mpg.

Ford may be reconsidering all options at this point.

I had an '85 Ranger 4cy 4x4, too... great truck, even if it was a bit underpowered by the previous owner adding a body lift and 30 inch tires. I used it on the farm to do much the same things as you described, hauling seed and feed, some light towing (hay racks, ATV trailer, etc.). I also had a full-sized 4x2 F150 during this time, and while it was limited to what it could do, it did fill a niche when it came to hauling and towing larger loads, so I would'nt dismiss that option out of hand. Right now all I have for "truck" is my '94 Ranger 4x2. With gas prices the way they are, compromises needed to be made, and so the full-size truck had to go.

As for finding a 4cyl 4x4, I've seen them for sale on occasion. Most of the time I see them owned by people who live in town and just need the front axle for towing a boat or winter driving.

I think this is what I would like to replace my car with, the wife has a car for when we need it. I think it would make a lot more sense for me to have a little truck rather than going to town with the car for work and then driving back with the tonner for calf starter seed feed ect. If anyone knows of a 4cyl 4x4 ranger reg or x cab let me know. I would perfer the 93-97 model if possible.
