Wipers Dead-GEM issue?
My windshield wipers don’t work. The trucks been sitting for a few days, so I don’t really know when they worked last, or why they’ve gone out.
Fuse #11(30A) is OK since the washer fluid pump works. I don’t hear any attempt by the wiper motor to run, not even a relay click (dead quiet). I believe there’s something wrong with an onboard computer somewhere because with the key in the accessories position and the wipers switched on, the ABS idiot light in the dash comes on. Also the hood courtesy light doesn’t light anymore, but that same ABS idiot light in the dash comes on when I pop the hood. I tried disconnecting the battery (and turning on the headlights to bleed any residual voltage down), in an attempt to reset the GEM, but the problem remains. Mirrors, door locks, power windows, etc. all work OK. It's just the wiper motor isn't getting the instruction to run under any circumstance.
I’ve seen some posts about some kind of housing switch defect, maybe this is my problem:
Defect Summary:
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER CARS, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, AND LIGHT AND MEDIUM DUTY PICKUP TRUCKS. A SWITCH LOCATED IN THE PLASTIC COVER OF THE WIPER MOTOR GEAR CASE COULD MALFUNCTION AND OVERHEAT, POTENTIALLY RESULTING IN LOSS OF INTERMITTENT WIPER FUNCTION, LOSS OF WIPER PARK FUNCTION, COMPLETE LOSS OF WIPER FUNCTION, OR IGNITION OF THE PLASTIC COVER MATERIAL. SWITCH MALFUNCTION IS MOST LIKELY TO OCCUR WHEN THE INTERMITTENT SETTING OF THE WIPERS IS BEING USED, OR WHEN SNOW OR ICE OBSTRUCTS THE BLADES FROM RETURNING TO THE "PARKED" POSITION AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD. THESE VEHICLES WERE BUILT AT THE FOLLOWING ASSEMBLY PLANTS: ATLANTA PLANT FROM 2/11/00 THROUGH 7/31/00; CHICAGO PLANT FROM 2/14/00 THROUGH 8/4/00; KANSAS CITY PLANT FROM 2/26/00 TO 9/4/00; KENTUCKY TRUCK PLANT FROM 2/18/00 TO 8/31/00; MICHIGAN TRUCK PLANT FROM 2/23/00 THROUGH 8/3/00; NORFOLK PLANT FROM 2/21/00 THROUGH 7/27/00; WAYNE STAMPING AND ASSEMBLY PLANT FROM 2/25/00 THROUGH 8/15/00; AND WIXOM PLANT FROM 2/15/00 THROUGH 8/8/00.
I’m not sure what to try next and I want to take a trip this weekend.
The switch on the steering column is known to fail.
Check the plug on the wiper motor itself for corrosion.
The next question would be is it the GEM module or the switch in the column(the multifunction switch). Here's a bunch of junk from the service manual, but it looks like they use the scan too to troubleshoot if it's not a fuse.
Inspection and Verification
The wiper/washer system is a generic electronic module (GEM)/central timer module (CTM) controlled system.
Verify the customer concern by operating the wiper/washer system.
Visually inspect for the following obvious signs of mechanical and electrical damage.
Visual Inspection Chart Mechanical Electrical
Hoses to windshield washer pump
Wiper/washer switch
Wiper linkage
Windshield wiper motor
Fuse(s) 11 (30A), 15 (5A), 20 (50A), 21 (50A), and 103 (50A).
Damaged wiring harness
Loose or corroded connector(s)
Circuitry open/shorted
If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the scan tool menu. If the scan tool does not communicate with the vehicle:
check that the program card is correctly installed.
check the connections to the vehicle.
check the ignition switch position.
If the scan tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the scan tool manual.
CARRY OUT the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If the scan tool responds with:
CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Section 418-00 .
NO RESP/NOT EQUIP for GEM/CTM, go to Pinpoint Test G.
SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the GEM/CTM.
If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the GEM/CTM Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, proceed to Symptom Chart to continue diagnostics.

I lied about no relay activity, actually it is clicking, and I swapped it out with an identical relay, but still no motor run.
I'll be digging into the motor tomorrow I guess. Anyone know how tuff an R & R is for this one?
