Well my beast has been down for paint etc now A/C is lukewarm. Will get hot soon so I was wondering about converting to R134A. I have converted many systems over-some do great, some do OK,& some seem to cool less at idle. Was wondering how other 73-79 pickups work with R134A.Any input?

I would strongly advise aganst it, I have a '78 with factory air running R12, my a/c guy said HE wouldn't convert it as I'd be back around 3 months later to complain of no cooling due to the R134 eating all the rubber hoses from the inside, and the seals as well, plus the R134 DOES NOT cool nearly as well as the R12, I have heard for years that R12 is not being manufactured anymore, but every shop I inquire about says they have plenty, so they are getting it somewhere.

Check out the Vintage Air website for some good info on this. I read all about exactly what you're asking. The hoses have to be changed out to a barrier type hose if the vehicle is older than a certain year and the reason why you don't get the cooling at idle depends on the type of compressor and the fact that there is some part you need to compensate for the difference in R134 fluid pressure. It's actually supposed to be more efficient and cooler if done right.
James (but I'm not an expert)
