I have the chance to buy a 289 that has been rebuilt with not very many miles on it ( less that 1k) that is coming out of a 65' mustang. They got a different motor so this one is getting sold. Engine has everything except for the carb. The motor looks great and ran great when he pulled it out. What do you think this motor is worth?
Depends on which 289, the 289HP is very desirable and bring some unreal prices. Same for the Cobra version with aluminum intake. The stock "65"289 4bbl. is 225hp, the 289HP is 271hp, and the Cobra comes in around 305hp. I have seen the HP bring over $3500 on E-Bay. The 289 is a great little engine even stock. I would ****** it up if you can get a good deal.
Well I doubt anyone would pull an honest-to-God K-code 289 out of a Mustang and replace it with something else. Likewise, I doubt anyone would swap out the engines in an original Cobra or GT350.
What it's worth kind of depends on what's in it. Most folks selling a vintage 289 out of a Mustang think it's worth more than it is. $500-750 for a good running long block is fair. If it's got a lot of forged parts, etc. maybe $1,000. If it's a recent rebuild there should be receipts...
To the right guy, a five bolt brings some good bucks!!!! Sold one short block (dissassmebled, cleaned, mag tested) with a late '64 date code for $850 plus shipping to a guy in England, of all places!!!!! He had a '64 Fairlane 4 speed car that some poor GI evidently forgot to take home with him!!!!
