Starter problem 911 HELP PLEASE

Question for you all,
I have a 97 Taurus with 3.0 the starter went out on it, I went to advance auto and got a new Remy starter it is not a rebuilt one, it came with a different type of groubd wire on it than the one that was on it, I guess that it is something that Ford has done due to dirt getting in the spade hookup, any how,,, I have installed it, tried to hook the ground up on my battery and the starter engages, I pulled the hot wire off of it and made sure that i had it hooked up right, then when i put the hot wire back on i never put the nut on it and tryed it and it worked fine, so i put the nut back on and tightened it back down, and the same thing happened again it was engaging. So i took off the nut again and it worked ok, anyone had this problem before ? Am I doing something wrong ?? Help Please the wife has to have the car in the A.M. to go to work. Thanks

You should only have two wires connected to the solenoid. There should be the heavy gauge wire from the battery connected onto the free large terminal on the solenoid and the light gauge wire. The light gauge wire is usually connected to the solenoid with a spade or a small nut. If you have a ground it should be between the body of the starter and the engine block. What seems to be happening in your case is that the terminal on the wire from the battery is touching the small terminal on the solenoid and energising it. Have a close look and make sure the battery wire is not touching the small terminal, it may just need repositioned.

You may want to call the parts store to make sure they gave you the correct starter. There could be an early or late 97 model that will make a difference. Or go back to the parts store with your old starter and get them to match it with a new one.

Thank's all,, yes that is what is happening i removed the starter and wire's and got it up to where i could see what was going on and the way that the hot wire terminal is made it has a lip on it, is touching the ground. I can fix this by cutting the lip off of iy but i am wondering if i should do that or take it back ( I live 30 minute's from town ) Whatcha all think ?
