The A/C unit on my Explorer (95 EB) seems to be stuck on high speed. It has the automatic climate control. When I start the unit, the fan speed doesn't seem to decrese when I rotate the speed dial control. There's a "slight" speed decrese, but not as much as the dial would be indicating. Please help. What do I need to correct? What do i need to check? Is is expensive?
Hi speed is the "default" mode for these switches, all other speeds being controlled by a rheostat. Sounds like the switch is bad. Often just the metal slider that contacts the rheostat coils can be adjusted to provide better contact by simply bending it. Switch lubricant that has managed to coat the contacts can sometimes cause a problem. Check AutoZone or Checker/Kragen/Parts America first, as their prices a generally much lower than from the dealer. Can also check on-line at www.autozone.com or partsamerica.com
If your 95 Explorer is like my 93 F-150, the resistor module that controls the fan speed is bad. If one of the resistors inside the module opens, the fan will only run in HIGH. The resistor module resides inside the plenum, but are accessible from the outside. Should be a simple swap once you find where the little bugger is hiding.
