Hello,
So I recently got married and one of the wedding presents is a new vehicle.
Luckily my wife is letting me trade in my 7.3 for a new FOrd. Im stuck between getting a used 07 or and 08. I dont know if I want the new 6.4 since its switching in a year, while the 6.0 has been around for a while. Any suggestions? I realize I would get a biased opinion in the 6.4 forum but I thought maybe some of you had 6.0 before you got the new truck. Thanks!!
i would get the 6.4.very few of them had problems.the 6.4 isnt gonna get the milage the 6.0 will, but with some tuning and dpf delete the 6.4 can get good fuel milage.boh engins have there pros and cons.
I have owned 7.3's. 6.0's and now a 6.4. Forget the engine for a minute.....the 2008 is the nicest, smoothest, quietest, most comfortable truck without question. If that is important to you then buy the 08 and quit reading now.
As for the engine - The good is that it is really quiet, power is smooth, and has been a LOT less problematic than the 6.0 ever thought about. I had a 06 F350 and in 12,000 miles had both head gaskets, EGR cooler, 5 injectors, wiring harness, injector harness, CAC tubes, etc, etc, etc. Loved the truck, hated calling roadside assistance all the time.
The bad - the 6.4 averages about 2-4 less MPG (unless you remove the DPF) and in my opinion feels somewhat lazy. It is rated at more HP/TRQ but I sure dont feel it in the seat. It feels about the same as my 6.0 except from a stop. The turbo lag (or programming) makes the 6.4 really lazy from a stop light.
You didnt specify your needs for a super duty diesel truck. Are you towing? Do you just like big trucks? Do you like/plan to do mods? The 6.4 is not as mod friendly due to the DPF and Ford's ability to detect tuners. The 6.0 has more items available for it but plan on fixing/replacing the known problem areas (EGR cooler delete, head studs, etc) before cranking it up.
I have had them all and I am driving a 6.4 now. Not to say the others were bad, but for now the 6.4 is obviously my choice.
Mainly I just like having a truck. I will be using it for work for just a lil while longer then it will just be my main ride. I always intend to mod my vehicles but I just never get around to it. So realistly it will probly stay stock except for a stereo system and some bigger tires.
The DPF delete Will save some MPG but you WILL be Pi$$ing away your factory warranty!!! Also if caught without the DPF you could be prosecuted by the Feds and recieve a substantial fine. Thats why the guys that sell the DPF delete kits make you sign a statement that you will not drive the truck on a public highway.
If all you want is a truck, I'd wait a year and get a F150 with the 4.4L diesel. Less money, hopefully, and better fuel economy (hopefully) for daily driving.

Yeah but lets be far about this statement, removing the CAT on the 6.oh can have the same repercussions as you stated above and how many guys with 6.ohs are running around with stright pipes and tunning thats is not carb certified.

I have to agree with this, i am a current owner and a previous owner of a 7.3 and a couple 6.oh no's. I would have to say this is the best SD i have owned so far.

From what i have read the 4.4L F150 has been postponed due to rising fuel cost, which now has them looking at alternate fuels.

BUT:
Ford had little way of determining if a tuner had been installed on a 6.0.
You didn't have to have a tuner in order to remove a CAT from a 6.0.
Visible smoke from a 6.0 is not especially noteworthy.
A glance at the exhaust tips on a 6.4 is all thats needed to tell if its got a functioning DPF.
I agree 100%, ford had a hard time seen if the computer was flashed but the actual engine components do not lie once the motor was tore down. Same story goes for the 6.4.
My point was tampering with any carb cert device could lead to a fine on the 6.0 or the 6.4 or any engine for that matter, the rules apply for all the engine.

Ok, my point is its much easier to tell if the 6.4 has been modified.
On a straight piped 6.0 all we know is something is missing.
On a straight piped 6.4 we know something is missing and the engine programming had to have been modified.

Not in all case's, the 6.4's have been know to have cracked DPF's which would lead to the symptoms you have discribed.
