Ok, shelved this thing for a few months as it got rather cold, & I don't have heat in the garage. just rolled it out & pulled the timing cover off, hoping I'd find it out of time. didn't. timing's dead on. to update what's been done so far, I've replaced the following: Carburetor, Distributor, plugs & wires, intake gaskets, carb gaskets & spacer, Ignition box. still won't idle below about 1000 rpm, tried putting air pressure to one of the cylinders last fall through spark plug hole, never could get it to seal. kept getting air out the exhaust no matter how we rotated the engine. now suspecting valves, or maybe the cam. anybody have any thoughts?
You cant check the timing just by looking at the gears. You need to hook up a timing light. As others have said here, you have to be sure you're using the right kind of distributor for the camshaft. Have you checked that? If you let that slip, it doesn't matter how well you can get it to run, the gear will strip at some point and leave you stuck.
I would also put a vacuum gauge on it and see what it's pulling at idle.
What cylinder were you doing the air pressure test on? Have you done a compression test? I would do that before considering what you did valid at all.

That ain't right. That cylinder should have sealed at some point. I would pull the valve cover on that cylinder's side and take a look at that valve-train, particularly the exhaust valve on that cylinder.
I would pull a compression test on the rest of the cylinders as well.
Did you try that on any other cylinders?
If you narrow the problem down to that one cylinder, you may be able to fix it by pulling that head.( Or at least visually spot the problem.)
oh well. still no progress. big road trip coming up in a month, need some cash. time to put it up for sale. would've liked to get to play with it when it was running right to see what it could really do. thanks to all that offered advice.
