column mounts

Hello guys, Anyone have ideas and pics on homemade brackets or mounts for steering columns. (GM) for a '56 f 100? Trying to stay away from the manufacturers and build my own. I've seen guys use connecting rods before but wanted other ideas. Thanks fellas.

Here are some pictures of the one I fabbed up using the lower segment of the stock GM coulmn bracket and two pieces of angle iron that I bent and welded to match the column angle and the dash and two short segments of angle iron that was used to attach the bent angle iron to the modified bracket. Hopefully these pictures will show what i had done. I first cut the tops off the GM stock bracket, bent the angle iron and bolted it to the dash base, then with the column in place tacked the angle iron to the modified bracket, pulled the bracket and finalized the welds.

It's pretty simple and the best part about it is the price.

Steering column brackets

Look a some of the afermarket magazines or mail order catalogs. Many have brackets that should be easy to copy or give you an idea to make one. chuck

I built one years ago for a 36 Plymouth using Aluminum. I cut the column hole with a Hole Saw. Then drilled, threaded, counter-bored bolt holes vertically on each side of the hole, to secure the column and on top to bolt it to the dash. I then cut it across horizonally in the center of the hole, and finished the ID fit using a Belt Sander. Also used the belt sander to make the angle where it sat on the bottom of the dash. With the material costs, time and labor these days $65.00 bucks to purchase one probably isn't bad.

I just bought a billet one on ebay for $15.00. Wasn't worth it for me to make one. Polished it up and installed it. I like it. I had a U bolt holding the column up before.

Made it out of left over scraps and took me about 20 minutes to build.

I just did the connecting rod thing. I too didn't feel like paying 65 plus for the shiny stuff so I went to the local machine shop and asked for a connecting rod in the correct diameter. I knew the 5.O rod would fit so thats what they gave me with ARP bolts installed for free. Couldn't beat the price.
