Funny thing about having a truck on 44s. Yesterday , I repacked my right front wheel bearings on my truck-I did the left side two weeks ago. Anyway, since the right side tire was off, I decided to try side gapping my spark plugs. It was easier to stand in the fenderwell and change them. So, naturaly, I pulled the left side tire off to change the left side plugs. When I jacked up the left side, I found a puddle of gear oil on the right side of the truck under the axle tube. The seal inside the carrier is leaking ! Dammit. Now I have to pull the whole front end apart.
Here is my question; should I put a spool in the front rear since I have to pull it all apart anyway? Its a mud truck. I have a detroit in the back. I was just wanting opinions, what do you think of a spooled dana 60 in the front of a 4x4?
Probably suffer a rash of snapped axles when you turn, I'd go with a air locker. More money up front yea but I be it be cheaper in the long run, lot less time to not having to fix it every time you snap a axle.
Not to mention u-joints, lockouts, inner spindle bearings, carrier bearings all tore up all the time if the axle doesn't and or does snap. The load will be spread through all of it until the weak link gives.
Something has to give to turn corners, especially running big meats that grab lots of mother earth.
