a/c, heater core question

This is from another thread in the Super Duty section. Thought someone here might have expert answers!

One simple question about the lines to and from the heater core. Could someone explain what the coolant returning from the core to the engine is doing? Is it just being dumped back into the system or does it serve something else along the way? One hose comes off the front of the engine. The second hose seems to just connect at the back of the V-10. Which way is the coolant flowing?
Reason for the question is to decide if the single ball valve solution to improving a/c is perfectly ok. Or, if the more complicated design with 3 valves and a length of hose that keeps the coolant circulating through the hoses, but bypassing the heater core, is Really better for some reason. Service at dealer had never heard of anyone doing anything other than a single valve and just opening it every few weeks for fresh coolant to the hc.

a/c, heater core question

Hi Shepard,

the only thing I can tell you is that the cooling line that is coming back to the water pump will be the return which means this is the inlet from the heater core. The coolant basically just circulates through the core and back again through the engine but the core does act as a device to help cool the antifreeze but not near as good as the rad up front. Hope this helps.

a/c, heater core question

Thanks - The two lines on my truck just look like they go right into the main part of the engine. Does not look like one of them goes to a seperate thing like the water pump. But then again, I would not know what a water pump looks like.

On your second point, are you saying that bypassing the heater core in the summer to help with the a/c functioning might raise the engine operating temps? Or is what the core does as far as cooling so little that it would not make any difference?

a/c, heater core question

Hi Shepard,

Well, you cannot miss the waterpump. It is right behind your fan by the rad. The fan attaches to the pump.

Bypassing the heater core will not make any noticable difference to the engine temp that I would be aware of. But, if you had a problem with a door under the dash and were not getting enough cold air with air conditioning then maybe it would help your inside air. I'm probably getting too technical so I shall leave it at that.
