trans noise

my 1960 f100 4x4 developed a whine/howl in high gear and it can also be heard now in third if wound out. truck is all orig. with 292 and wanted some opinions on what to do. truck has aprox. 55k orig. but was used as a plow truck. is there a bolt in trans that would make it happier as a daily driver (higher gearing)? I talked to someone that went through a lot of work to get the factory overdrive installed and had nothing but trouble. is there a good supply source for a complete trans. overhaul kit?

Usually whines and howls come from worn rear ends. That's also where you do your gear changes for increased performance depending on what the performance you desire is.

I agree. This has a sweet spot and sure sounds like its coming from the trans.
researching gears I coming up with maybe 3.25 gears. It has the 16" rims with slightly taller tires from factory on it now that need replaced due to dry rot. probably do a 265/75/16 radial.
