I have a 4.6 expy with a tranny problem
when cruising and the tranny has to upshift it sometimes shudders for a second (sound like you just hit a rumble strip) also when slowing down to a stop it sounds like a valve tap in the engine but doesnt do it at an idle or when you rev the engine in park or neutral. Its about due for a fluid change in 3000 miles. the fluid has been changed every 30k as recommended but never changed the fluid in the TC. I have never done the TC before. Is it hard to do? and how do you fill it? I have read other threads on here and it seems changing the fluid in the TC might be the answer
Thanks for any help in advance
TC- Transfer Case is easy to change, only hold 2 QT's and there is two plugs on the rear of case just above cross member you will only need a 3/8" drive. Check your owners manual for type of fluid, should be transmission fluid
If tranny is "shuddering" when in OD, then I would definitely change the trans fluid completely. Thisd may not fix the shuddering if it is real bad. But, new fluid is the first step. If you are a do it yourselfer, then to drain the Torque converter after draining the pan, remove the inspection cover at the lower front of the tranny, and the rubber plug. There you will see the torque converter. This is where it gets tricky; your truck may not have a drain plug on the tc, but mine did. You will need to "bump" the starter, with help from a friend until you see the drain plug, line up with where the rubber plug once was, hopefully. Drain it, replace the plug, and refill the system...Good luck.
Torque converters had drain plugs up until 02 or 03....
You can do a simple pump 'n flush (the procedure is in the service manual and has been posted here -check the Articles section) ) and you will also change the TC fluid.
