I have a '97 Ranger with 4.0 6 cyl. About a year ago the A/C stopped cooling. I bought a can of R-134 and recharged the coolant. That worked for about 6 months. Soon after that I could tell that the compressor was starting to clicking in & out of engagement as if it was low again. This time I got smart and bought a gauge along with another can of R-134. When I tested the pressure (not sure what else this little gauge WOULD test), it showed that the system was overcharged, so I had the system bled to get the pressure back in the normal range. Unfortunately the A/C continues to act as if it is low on coolant and will not engage the compressor. It cycles through continually, but will not hook up.
I'm not sure if I'm getting a correct reading of the gauge since it reads green, but when the compressor tries to engage, I see the needle creeping down toward the low coolant range of the gauge. Since I can't GET the compressor to engage, I know I'm not looking at a correct reading of the pressure.
