Broken 4 Speed Shifter
1979 F-250 4X4 4 Speed
Shifted my truck out of reverse today and the shifter came out of the top of the tranny! I remember my dad (retired mechanic for ford dealer) talking about this several years ago. Took the boot off and a round cup shaped piece appears to have a small notch broken off. This piece still available from ford or another source? I stuck the shifter back, but it still won’t come out of reverse.

Ppl don't realize on the NP 435 transmission that they need to press down on the shift lever retaining cap...then rotate it a 1/4 turn to remove it, and so one or both of the notches tear apart.

Since this cap has been a long time "best seller" for Ford, most dealers should have stock. If not...it prolly won't take more than a day to order one.

btw: The Warner T18/T19 4 speed shift lever retaining cap is threaded, so it screws off/on. Most dealers don't carry it (8MTH7220), because it hardly ever fails.
