I've run a search and didnt find quite what i was looking for so...
have a 92 5l with an e40d, 190000 on her now and it still holds dan good compression, but i noticed an occasional rough shift in and out of OD and engagement into R i ridiculously slow, so i found a local aod-e and was wondering if its a good desicion to try to swap. does anyone now what it will take? and is it worth the trouble? i guess i mean is it a better trans? bought the trans with 40000 miles on it, torque convereter and all hard lines for $125, figured if its a pain ill just resell the aod-e.
I wouldn't necessarily consider it a better tranny--the E4OD replaced the C6 and was used behind all the bigger engines, whereas the AODE was only used behind the 4.9L and 5.0L.
Other than that, it should be a direct bolt-up, but you may need to look into the cross-member and driveshaft length, and I have no idea if there are any differences in the electronics. If so, you may need a different wiring harness and computer. Hopefully some others will chime in here on those counts.
the E4od is physically a lot bigger, and really stronger. i would stick to doin stuff to the E4od. i'm not a trans guy but i've read on here that you can redo them for pretty reasonable. THe aod-e may very well be in need of a rebuild shortly down the road as well.. so if you factor in the cost to buy it vs fixin yours... that would be what i'd look at. imho
reasonable!?! deffinately not, have you looked into rebuilding any of these dern things, i could put in almost 10 of these junk yard trannsmissions in for the rebuild of one e40d, likely that i may as well, but thats another matter. well. i guess its off to craigslist then wait for the e40d to blow then, damn, thought i got away with a good deal too!
Have you changed the fluid and filter to see if that improved things any? If it doesn't have a fairly large fluid cooler and a working clutch fan, add one and fix the other.
The fluid cooler should be installed back against the radiator so the fan pulls air through it as well as the radiator. Needs to work when the truck sits at a light.
The E4OD will last a long time with good maintenance, change the fluid and filter often and keep it cool. Keep it at about 140deg.
Pull the codes and see if it has any on the OD shift, may be a solenoid issue or some simple thing if not just the fluid/filter.
first thing i did was a full service on the trans, and the only code it pulls is an egr valve open not detected, otherwise i wouldnt have considered a new trans, thanks for the brainstormin with me though!
