d60f is now home

For those of you who read my d44 d60 swap, I got my 60 home today. It is indeed a d60, it has kingpins instead of balljoints, and makes my d44 look like a toothpick. Thing must weigh 600lbs or more. Dame near killed me getting it out and in my truck today. One of the axle U-bolts snapped off, I fell back busted my head wide open(blood just running down my head, neck and into my shirt), fell off the car I was standing on to get the axle out and busted my sholder. The truck was stacked on top of two cars. Did it all by myself, could not find anyone to help on such short notice.

I got the axle, brakes, rotors, hubs, steering, and stabilizer bar/links for $100 even. I need/want to go back and get the front drive shaft, T-case yoke and rear stabilizer bar/links on Monday depending on the weather. After getting the axle out and into my truck and my head bleeding and sholder hurt I was in no mood to get the rest of it out today.

So for those of you who wanted to know, it's a 60 and yes I got it!!!

Guess now I have a d44hd with 4.10's to get rid of.

Bill

Sweet deal man! Those axles are a cun*t to move around. I got mine from a wrecker put in with a fork lift then when I got home I backed my truck(lifted 96 yota on 35" rockers) into a bank in my yard that was the same height as tailgate. Then it sat for about a few days trying to figure out how to move it across my gravel driveway and onto my concrete slab I work on. Had a tow truck come to tow my bro's truck to a tough truck 4x4 comp and he couldn't do it cuz the truck was too big (boo hoo cry me a river) so I told him he might as well be good for somethin and hook up my 60 on his hook and drive it to my truck. There was no way I could of even used my engine lift to move it cuz those little wheels don't exactly roll over dirt and gravel very well. Hmmm...maybe I could of sooped it up all sweet and stuff with big meats lol

Might be easier to install axle with everything taken off and out like rotors, spindles, tie rod,and axles(don't pull carrier unless you gotta replace gear ratio.(I'm guessing it's 3:54 they usually are for some reason). I did this with my bros dana 60 which was on gravel. You might as well tear into it and check out the bearings and everything. Mine was easy I put it on a floor creeper and rolled it in place. Now you gotta go buy yourself a d60 axle socket

Thats a pretty sweet deal man, i guess the yard owner didnt know what he was sitting on. Some of the rock crawler guys will pay up to $1500 for a kingpin ford d60 in rebuildable condition.

The yard guys wouldn't even pull it down off the cars? You WV guys must have a thing about hitting your heads. Well that was a good find.

Wow, kinda sounds like that 60 kicked yer **** a little. But it was probably worth it for getting it for only $100. Whats a little blood and lost brain cells anyway, they regenerate back

Well let's see if I can get these in one post.

The yard guys would not get it down because they don't care about selling parts anymore. The owner has turned his junk yard into a metal recycling place. At one time he had lines and lines of 70's Ford trucks. One day I went up to look for something and they were all gone. Crushed and sent away.

I have a d60 socket for the rear, I guess it will work on the front also.

Yea moving this thing around is going to be a real pain in the a**. It's still in the back of my truck, still trying to figure out how to move it around. This truck is a long term project and I just kinda fell across the axle. So right now I'm not in any big hurry to do anything with it but get it off my truck.

Where in WV do I live, well let's just say I live in the Eastern Panhandle.

I plan on tearing the axle down and doing a complete rebuild on it, plus I need to change the gears. Yes it has the 3.54 and the D60r on the truck I'm building has 4.10's, so it's getting all new bearings and gears, but even if it didn't need gears it would still get taken apart and redone. Cleaning and painting and bearings etc. Anyone need a set of 3.54's out of the 60?

To say it kicked my but would be a little understatement, I found out today at work that I hurt my arm as well. I've got a large bruise starting and the muscle hurts like he**, but all in all for what I paid it was worth it! Ain't no fun if you don't bleed a little.

When you pull that gear and if it looks fair let me know.
I eventually want to change my 60's to 3:54/3:50,and that would be a start.

If you can weigh the gears I could find out shipping costs.

Too bad you didn't live up here...I had a set of mint 3:54 rear and d60 reverse cut front that I tried giving away for months. I finally just turffed them.

Buck above you mentioned that you have a rear D60 spindle nut socket, and you assumed it would be the same for the front, and,,,,,, it is not.
The D60 front socket is a special socket, and can be found at about any parts supply house, or favorite tool truck.

I live between clarksburg and fairmont. Not real close to the eastern panhandle. Did you know we have a WV Chapter on this site? Just scroll down on the index page and its in the southern section.
