help rear end issues...

alright well my rear end is going out... started as a spooling sound that i was thinking may be my spedo cable but after it turned to a grinding i found out where it is coming from... so my issue is im not sure the gears in the rear end...
my truck
82 f150
302
c6
door says axel code h6
i could not find a plate on the rear end saying ratio
bronco lists h6 as a 3.5 limited slip but thats only for 85 - 86
... so needless to say im confused
also is it a 9 inch rear end?
any help would be appreciated... i have the vin number off of it also if it helps

another thing would it be best to replace the entire rear end ? or
i was told on ford rear ends you can replace everything just by replacing the 3rd member
but idk
ty in advance

Look at the axle. If there is a plate that bolts on to the back side, you have the 8.8 and will have to have it repaired in the truck.

If the back is smooth, and there are studs with nuts holding the carrier to the housing, you have a 9 inch.

IF you have the 9, you can pull a wheel, pull the brake backing plate, and pull an axle to check the spline count. You may need to use a slide hammer to break the axle loose. I used a long bolt, nuts and big washers and a piece of pipe to make one as we didn't have one.

Once you determine the spline, if it measures up to the other diff, you may be in business. A side-by-side check during installation will confirm the sameness issues. (9 vs. 9 3/8s ring might be a worry, not sure when this comes up)

BE SURE you clean out the axle housing. You need to use a stick or rod & some rags & solvent to clean the tubes out, start at the end and push it all to the middle. Debris loves to hid in the tubes. Then it goes right to the bearings of the new carrier.

Anyway, check it out, you may have gotten lucky if the '78 is good unit.

I paid $450 or so from "...the nine inch experts...." in 1992. Took them 5 trys to get one that didn't howl.

So, that parts search site shows a bunch for $200, that sounds pretty good.

Go to Currie and see $1200+. That's where that second image comes to mind.....
