Well after 6 weeks of waiting for parts to show up via UPS and FED EX, going to the local hardware store to get bolts, and numerous trips to the junk yard, she is almost done!! I just need to figure out the wiring harnes; what needs to go and what I need to keep and/or what I can swap out from my old 300 to my new (well okay used but new to me) mild 302 such as the thrmostat housing for the temp sensor, the oil pressure sending unit, and the tach...
Also I need to figure out the throtle cable problem:
the cable it self is plenty long but I need to move the brackit forward a lil. Because were the bracket sits now and when the cable is hooked up, the throltle stays open about half way...so......
Anyway once I have it all done and back on the road I will post some pics for y'all!!
okay the reason I went from a 300 to a 302 is because I wanted more power and wanted to fix up the engine to get the most power out of it. Another reason I made the switch is my 300 number 2 cylender had 2 cracks running down the entire leanth of the cylender and I didn't want to get it sleaved and the 300 was old and tired and needed a compleate rebuild. Also it didn't have the get-up-and-go that I would like. And peak torque at about 2000 RPM yes, but no low end torque that I like. In other words I was looking for a engine that could leave my tires in a pile on the road!!
My 302 has an Edelbrock Performer 289 intake, Flowtech headers, mild cam, and a newly rebuild Holly 600cfm carb, with a Ford,s top loader trannie behind it and a NP208 t-case, unfourtintly I have the 8.8 axle at the end and a Dana 44 IFS up front.
But when I was running the 300 I wasn't impressed unless I had the shell off, back seat out, and the spare tire out. then she did okay. The 300 didn't like to pull any kind of grade. Maybe it was because I have 3.08 gears and a wide ratio tranny? I dunno
But in my mind the 300 is guttless, sorry that's just my opinon.
the whole problem was your gear ratio. 3.08's are turds. and if you still are running those with the 302 setup you have its going to be even more of a dog below 3000rpms now. the 4 speed manual will help some in that department but you better upgrade your clutch otherwise it wont last to long.
I used to own a 73 f250 4wd hiboy. had 4.10's,300-6 and np435/np205. that truck would out pull my friends running small block v8's and offroad it was a true goat.
I suggest you find another 8.8 rear end with at least a 3.55 gear and swap out your front D44 center section with the matching ratio. I have both and live in BEND if your interested. $75 for both rear end and front center section.
as for the bracket, check your local yards for a carb/throttle cable bracket from similar year bronco/f150/f250. should be the same.
Well unfortunaly I blew all of my money on this lil project, but I would like to keep that offer open?
Anyway,
Well another update/question:
All is good I got the lower rediator hose fabbed up, all the fluids in, all the wiring hooked up and spliced togeather, got the starter in, and dubble checked the firing order and the location of the plug wires, everything was set!
I go to push in the clutch and step on the break, and turn the key......
vvvurmmm, the starter aint ingaging!!!!!! BTW at first I put in the starter from the 300...So I swap starters and put in the starter that came with my 302...(the 302 was origonaly an automatic tranny mounted to it).
So after I swap starters, I get back in the cab and try to crank it over and it does the same thing!! it don't engage the flywheel!!!!!!!!!!
SSSOOO I'm in a lil bit of a dilema;
Do I need to get another starter for a manual tranny 302,
OR
Do I keep my auto tranny 302 starter and go with a bigger starter gear,
OR
Do I need to get another flywheel that has 163 teeth verses 156 teeth?
dont forget to peform the cam break in period of 15-20mins at 2000rpm. then drain oil and refill and change again at 500 miles and again at 1500miles then lastly at 3000miles. you can do normal intervals and run synthetics at this time. ive heard Rotela diesal oils are the best to run during engine break in till the 3000mile hits.
Thank you. But I don't think I need to break her in bacause the guy I gought the engine from already perfromed a complete rebuild on the engine and put 25,000 on her sence the rebuild before I bought it. But sence it's been sitting for about 10 years in his garage I'll probably do something of the sort anyway just to play it safe.
I'll have to figure out how to post pic of her on here so y'all can see her.
Well off to the wrecking yard to turn in my cat then to the parts store to get me my starter!!!!
