Temp Gauge Fluctuation
On the way to work this morning (about 40 degrees out) I noticed that the temp gauge kept fluctuating between 1/2 and 1/4. The heat works fine and the gauge never reads above half way up. What would the most common cause of this be ? I am going to be replacing the upper & lower radiator hoses tonight, I guess I'll go ahead and slap a thermostat in and see if that fixes it. I also notice the same thing with the oil pressure gauge.

My guess.
The temperature sending unit.
Ford's gauges have always been a small problem.
The way it works is > The S/U *grounds out* to actuate the gauge.
I would suggest that there is conflict with the S/U trying to achieve the correct resistance.
Look for teflon tape on the unit's threads.
Sometimes this interferes with the contact.
