Ok,
I have a 1967 f100 2wd that had manual steering. I pulled the column and the steering box. I went and removed the power steering box and column from a 1972 f250 2wd with the 8 lug bolt pattern. I went to install the power steering today and discovered the pitman arm will not work due to the bend in it so I thought to swap them out with each other. Here is where the problem is. 1st they wont interchange because of the shaft size and keyway style on the pitman shafts. Then I thought of just removing the drag linkage and all that but then noticed on the f250 that the linkage mounts at each wheel spindle exactly the opposite than in my f100. What do I need here? I am thinking I need a pitman arm that will work. Any thoughts here. I have looked up at different articles of swaps but they dont go into much detail. If you have the part I need just let me know and I will buy it. One other thing that Ii never looked up is will all this work with a big block 429 stuffed in it. I have the motor mounts required for the swap but will there be clearance issues? The part number Ii have off of the steering box is D1TR3550-BA which is casted length wise on the housing then there is an aluminum tag stamped SPAR 72G-6B. Please give me a heads up on what to do to complete this. I am running out of time and must get this truck back together before I go overseas. Thanks for reading.
You should be able to get a pitman arm for a 67 ps box to work. I think the manual and ps box have different shaft sizes. The 67 center link is a different length from other years. The f250 linkage is all different. The 429 will fit as long as you did not get a bendix box with the odd cylinder protruding from the side.
Unfortunately I dont see any of these oldies around here because steel went up and everyone jumped on the crush wagon and crushed all the old stuff so now I am relying on us folks that might have the parts. I have many parts and would be even willing to barter parts for parts. Thanks for the tip, I will try and snoop around some more to see if I can find a pitman. But if anyone else sees this and can help out please reply. Thanks
