97 Expy lumpy idle; sets codes P0174 & P0171
We have a '97 Expy 5.4l with 122,000 miles. Ran fine until a few days ago when idle started felling lumpy and check engine light came on. Having had a similar problem on a different Ford truck I hastily replaced the idle air controller, to no avail. Took the Expy to Auto Zone and they pulled the codes. It has a P0171 and a P0174. Guy at AutoZone ran it in his computer and he says it may be the MAF sensor. I know that is located in the air intake, but have never had to replace one before. I suspect that it is rather pricey. Anyone have any experience with this particular problem ??? Thanks for your time...

The guy at AutoZone is an idiot.
You have a vacuum leak. Check the PCV hose elbow on the side of the intake facing the firewall.
See if the idiot at AutoZone can find you the Dorman HELP replacement.
Reset the PCM and retest.

Thanks for the help guys. The elbow to the PCV valve was in fact broken, from old age I guess. I replaced the assembly, from a Ford dealer was $28.00 for the part. Runs great now... Thanks again !!
