My 2001 power stroke will crank but won't turn-over. The vehicle was driven yesterday with no problems noted. I went to start the vehicle today and it cranks only.
Welcome to FTE. We'll need some more info, so don't be offended by a bunch of questions.
First how old are your batteries? Weak batteries (or corroded cables) will allow the engine to turn over what sounds to be fast enough, but it's really not. Second, have you checked your oil level? The fuel injectors fire off of engine oil, so if the oil is too low, no start.
How long did the truck sit since the last time it ran? After you confirm the batteries (and connections) and oil level are good, we might need to check the fuel level in the fuel filter, and oil level in the HPOP. Then we can move on from there.
Welcome to FTE! A few basic things first and them I'm sure that others will chime in. Is the oils clean and full? Fuel filter clean? Enough fuel and not parked on a incline? Have you changed out the cps recently? Are your batteries fresh? Low batteries woll turn over but not fire the truck.
The batteries are about 1 yr./old. The oil was just changed and reading full. The last time the vehicle was driven was yesterday. I just put the batteries on the charger to see what happens. I will let you know.
Sorry. I meant how many hours since it last ran in case we need to diagnose an HPOP leak down later.
You can also try a jump start if there is another vehicle available. The smaller the jump vehicle battery, the longer it will need to charge before the truck can start.
Edit: While you're waiting on the batteries to charge you could remove the fuel filter lid and make sure the bowl is full of diesel.
Does your tach move when you try to start the motor?
I thought 01 was when the tach started moving with a bad CPS? Any other ideas how to diagnose it?
As long as we're ignoring batteries, as Randy was kind enough to point out, does your glow plug (wait to start) light come on when you first turn on the key?
I replaced the CPS on recall about 2 months ago. I just tried starting the vehicle again with the charger. Now the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on.
Thanks for all the help so far. I am going to take it to the shop tomorrow and let them look at it. I wish I had an extra CPS, those things sound very tempermental. I will let you know what happens.
