81, look what I found. Looks like an early start to the 78/79 Lariat package.

Ranger that is an awesome find! My best friend has one of these 2wd XLT luxury group trucks, and we've been racking our brains trying to figure out why all his exterior mouldings had dark brown paint instead of black, and neither of us had seen any other trucks but his with those special door panels. This explains it all well. Even all of his weatherstripping is tan colored - absolutely beautiful interior! Thanks (and a rep to you)!

Ah yes, The XLT Luxury group did indeed morph into the lariat model. Except the lariat from 1978-1979 wern't as elaborate.

It's mentioned in the 1977 brochure you can see here.

http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_itemId=41199

I knew about them but didn't know exactly what they came with. Quite cool.

This also settles a question that was pondered years ago on this very forum about hood ornaments.

There was a question about where the "three lions with wreath" hood ornament belongs. I did some research with a Ford parts man buddy of mine and all we could find was that It belonged to the 1976 Ranger XLT Originally. Then became a option later on. Which this didn't make sence because not all Ranger XLT's had this ornament.

Well, it looks like you answered that question too.

Yes, rep for you.

Somehow I must of missed your post. I can't tell you where I found this info, you might claim it all as yours.

And one more trim option, I don't think was mentioned.
My 79 Custom came with the narrow chrome, dent moulding with no rubber insert.
It was only available on the Custom
Smooth and about an inch wide.
Kind of rare option but I have seen a few over the years.
Mine needs replacing and I have not found a vendor.
Probably end up replacing with the moulding with the rubber insert.

You will find that your nice-lookin' wheel-well trim will only cause you rust problems in the future........... ........... I'd just leave off any excess trim, that's about all any of it's good for

I don't think this door panel was mentioned, but I could have missed it.

I am not sure what it was from, but dad got it from some old codger that bought a bunch of old ford stuff from dealership auctions. The panels were still in the original ford box with ford stamping on back. Dad practically stole them too without trying.

It's a bad photo I cropped from another photo. I will try to get others another time. Essentially it looks like the Red Custom Panel Ranger posted but with black crushed velvet type of fabric. It also has the "squares" but I think it is a different pattern. Plus there is the chrome trim piece that goes around.

We used these to replace our worn out XLT Woodgrain Panels. They look very good up against the yellow.
