spark knocking

I have a 1995 f150 it has the 302 efi and a aode the truck drives and rides good , i bought the truck at an auction (state) on the way home i heard it spark knock and i thought it just needs a tune up so i tuned it up plugs wires cap rotor fuel filter and it still spark knocks i half to run 93 in it or 87 with fuel booster just wondering what else could be wrong . my buddy thinks its the distributer, could it be? the only other thing i did to the truck was add a cold air kit

One thing to keep in mind with older engines is that carbon buildup on the pistons/cylinder heads will slightly increase compression ratio. Of course cylinder/ring wear will also lower it so you might com out about even there. However, carbon deposits create "hot spots" in the combustion chamber which can lead to preignition.

The only *real* solution is to do a complete buildup of the engine. At 189K, I'm sure it could use it. You could go a little cheaper and just do the heads and polish the piston tops, but that's only a route I'd take if money was EXTREMELY critical. Worse comes to worse, keep running the 91 (or 87 with booster) and just keep motoring along.

There are some fuel additives that might help eliminate carbon buildup, but I don't know if they really do anything.

Good luck and enjoy.

PH could be right but if it was me I would retard the timing a couple of degrees or at least check it to see what it is.
