hi i have been asked to repair a 4.0 litre SOHC explorer with timing chain noise, first inspection shows lack of maintanence ##!**, also there is no oil pressure on start up. any advice would be helpfull. FIRST TIME on these motor's
No oil pressure on start up, as per the stock factory gauge, or have you verified this by installing an aftermarket mechanical gauge? Is there excessive noise when it starts that would also indicate a lack of lubrication (beyond the timing chain noise)?
I'd first look to make sure the wire is still on the OP sending uit and that the unit and gauge are functioning correctly, and then verify that there is indeed no oil pressure with the use of an aftermarket mechanical gauge if one hasn't been installed (you don't need to actually install the gauge in or under the dash, just hook it up in place of the factory sending unit.) If there is indded no oil pressure at all, then you're probably looking at an oil pump or bearing failure. It's also possible that the oil pump drive has broken.
