18578 2003-2005 Multiple Vehicles - Dtc P0191, P0171 And/or P0174
For 2003-2005 Multiple Vehicle Lines Which Use Electronic Returnless Fuel System {erfs}, The Appearance Of Self Test Continuous Memory Diagnostic Trouble Code P0191 (frp Ckt Performance) Does Not Specifically Indicate A Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor Or Fuel System Circuit Failure. The Fuel Rail Sensor Should Not Be Replaced Based Only Upon The Appearance Of This Dtc Alone. Follow The Revised On-line Pc/ed Pinpoint Testing For Dtc P0191 To Diagnose. Also, The Appearance Of Dtc's P0171 (ho2s11 Lean Prt Thrt) And/or P0174 (ho2s21 Lean Prt Thrt) May Be The Result Of Low Fuel Pressure. Do Not Replace Any Components Or Reprogram The Pcm Unless Pinpoint Testing Or Other Published Service Procedures Specifically Provides That Repair Action.
ISSUE:
Some 2005 F-150 vehicles built before 1/31/2005 and equipped with the 4.6L engine, may exhibit issues related to throttle pedal response hesitation on tip in, or the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with one or more of the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
P0172 - SYSTEM TOO RICH (BANK 1)
P0175 - SYSTEM TOO RICH (BANK 2)
P0171 - SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 1)
P0174 - SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 2)
NOTE: THROTTLE PEDAL RESPONSE WITH ELECTRONIC THROTTLE CONTROL (ETC) DIFFERS FROM RESPONSE WITH A THROTTLE CABLE. REPROGRAMMING THE PCM WILL IMPROVE, BUT MAY NOT ELIMINATE, THIS CONDITION.
I don't think so, but then anything is possible. The K&N was on there for about 3 months and 3K miles and even though the sensor was clean and dry it was still apparently giving the PCM some very erroneous data. I understand people can over oil the filters when cleaning them, but I've had a C&L and more recently a Steeda (since going FI) on my Mustang for several years now and haven't had a single problem. I'm told the replacement sensor has a lifetime warranty, so I'll put the K&N back on and see what happens.
