Programming keys

I'm up in Northern Alberta right now and my buddy ran into an issue with his '03 Explorer. His wife went to get a key for their new truck, got it cut, but they still need to program the new key. I looked in the book, and it looks like you have to have two programmed keys for the vehicle. They only got one key when they bought the truck.

So... the big question... it it possible to program the new key if they only have one programmed key, or do they have to go to the dealer to get the second key programmed? If it is possible, how?

I think that They will end up at thier local dealer, from everything I know it is impossibl to program a extra key if you don't have two to start with.

There have been posts that some locksmiths now have the equipment to do the programming for Ford PATS keys. Might be a little cheaper than the dealer if you can find one. Without two keys you're pretty much stuck.

Thanks for the replies. I did some more poking around, and it looks like they've got to go to the dealer to get the key programmed. I'll let them know. Thanks again

I had only one key, got a 2nd programmed at a local locksmith. It cost $ 65.00
