428 pi

Hello. New to this board. i somehow ended up owning 5 fords so i guess im a ford guy. My latest i traded some window and carpet cleaning for a clean 68 250 camper. my friend is retiring to mexico and couldnt take it. The trade was done and before i could look at the 390 he says ''ya my kid put a 428 police intercepter in it". This thing has way more power than a pickup needs, so my question is will it fit in my 89 cube van with a windsor or would that just be a stupid waste of a big block, i already have a strong 400 ready to go in when i have the time.

Welcome to FTE.

Never considered "too much power" a problem, as I have never had that problem. (darn it)

Won't fit the cube van without serious mods. As a "Ford guy" you need to learn that Ford uses about 300,000 bell housing patterns. The 390-428 are in the FE group, the W another and 400 yet another. All have their own bell patterns. If it is a decent 428 you should be able to sell it or horse trade it for cash or trinkets of some type. Also, that's why you are in the wrong forum, as this is a different engine series than the FE.

You can keep it in the truck and put a 2bbl carb on it. It won't have too much power then, and should run just fine in the lower rpm range.

It's always amazing how many 360-390's's magically change into 428's when a sale comes along.

True, but no one has ever said a 360 has "way more power" than they needed.......

351M/400 should have the same bell housing pattern as a Lima.

The Windsor pattern is common with the 4.9/300 I-6, 302/5.0 and the 351/5.7.

Uhm, yeah, nothing there is easy, FE engines such as the 428 are one bellhousing pattern. The Windsor is another pattern, and the 400 is yet another, so that won't work easy either. All depends I guess on what your tranny is and what can be swapped in with the engine at the same time. Like if it's a C6 and you want to stay C6 then there is a C6 version for all those engines, but no one C6 will fit any other of those 3.

Persaonlly I say keep the 428 where it is or find a better home for it. And put the 400 in as you planned. The 400 has the same pattern as the 460 so there are many good tranny options are available for it.
