Real Rough Ride

I have a 1990 full size Bronco . The person I bought it from said it had a 6 in lift , not sure what brand. It rides like a rock . This is my 1st lifted vechile and need some advise. Does someone make softer front springs or do I just live with ride. I am a volunteer firefighter and make medical call on some back roads and it seems like it just beats it to death. Will new shocks help ? One more thing . What is the difference between gas and hydraulic shocks ? Any help on my problem would be great.

Suspension lifts do not usually make a vehicle ride stiff. They can, if the shocks are not doing their job of dampening the bumps. When you stand at any corner of the Bronco and give it a good bounce, it should go down and come backup, and level off. If it does not, your shocks are probably bad.

Hydraulic vs. gas shocks. It is believed that shocks that get worked hard, will cause the hydraulic fuild to foam, and lose it's dampening ability. Gas ones are supposed to prevent this.

Unless you are moving along on washboard roads at a pretty good clip, you'll be okay with hydraulics.

Gas shocks are charged with high pressure gas some where around 150 psi.
They rebound as quickly as the suspension moves. Great for fast fire roads and offroading as well as highway.
When you take them out of the box, they have a strap on them to keep them compressed.

The hydraulic shocks don't operated this way. They resist or dampen the compression and rebound but tend not to operate as quickly as the gas units.
They will remain compressed until the suspension pulls them back out.

I operate the gas units. They are a bit more $$ and may offer a little more firmness. I think it makes the vehicle handle MUCH better on and off road.

If you are a "stock" type of guy, you will probably like the hydraulics just as well and save a few coins.
