I've got a 74 f100 with a recently rebuilt 302, 3 on the tree, and I'm thinking about swapping the 302 with the 300 6 that I have in a 86 f150 4 speed manual. The 86 is in better shape body wise than the 74 and I need the shoulder restraints for my grandaughter. I don't know alot about the 300 as I've never owned one before. The 302 is dependable the 300 is a question. I'm just not sure. Both are 2 wheel drive. Money is an issue(isn't it always?) but I need to get one of these dependable.
OK, I posted before I searched. It seems that the consensus over the past threads is that the 300 is better than the 302. Probably cheaper to just keep the thing the way it is. the 86 is a new acquire and I just don't know that much about it. I've already had to replace the tranny, and I can only keep one so the other has to go. Anyway thanks for any advice.
What 4 speed do you have, the low first of the OD?
I didn't understand part of your question--are you saying you want to put the old 302 in the '86? If so, is it because the 300 is worn out?
IF your 300 is running good, leave it alone. The EFI 300 was the most powerful stock 300 made, and if it is in good repair and all OEM, it ought to run pretty good and be good for 150-200,000 miles without much fuss.
So, to clarify--is the '86 with the 300 running good?
The 86 is carburated. Small 2 barrel. The motor itself seems to be okay. Has a major vacumn leak somewhere and the carb is loose about midway down.
I just know the 302 is dependable although the 74 body and front end need alot of work. I guess I just really need to go over the 300 real good and get it straight.
Well, your '86 should have been EFI or a 1bbl, so perhaps someone fooled with it. Find that vacuum leak, tune it up and drive it. If it doesn't knock, once you straighten out the intake/carb etc, it will deliver as good or better mpg than the 302 via that OD trans.
FWIW, the 302 will bolt to that trans too, but I think you'll be better off to fix the six.
I had a 74 F100 w/302, 3 on tree and 3.25 9" rear end....it was a great truck! It got just as good gas mileage as my 1986 F250 w/300 carb and 4 sp. non OD trans, and 3.73 rear gears (though bigger tires). all this at highway speeds. One thing I hate about mid -80's trucks, is the seatbelt mounting location. Rusted rocker panels are notorious on these trucks, and the seatbelt mount is bolted to them, which means the seatbelt ain't gonna help much when they're rusted....just something to look at on your truck. As for the 74, if you were closer, I'd buy it from ya, I wish I still had mine.
Thanks, I'll check out the seatbelt panels real close, because that's a need with my granddaughter. Yea, I'm kinda attached to the 74 too. front end is real sloppy and needs a paint job real bad but I like it. My Grandaughter wants me to paint it like mater on the cars movie.
