ulsd additives?

Hello all;

I am doing my dad a little favor and trying to find out if and what additive he should be running in his 2000 PSD with the new fuel. My understanding is that with the decreased lubricidy (sp?) of the new fuel, it could damage the injection system.

So, what are your thoughts?

There's always some debate on this. ULSD does have reduced lubricity, buy an additive is added to it before it reaches the pump. When they first started playing with the ULSD the EMA (engine manufacturer's association) & the EPA (idiots) disagreed on how much was enough. The EMA wanted better lubricity and wear scar ratings, but the EPA decided they weren't needed.

Many of us here use some type of additive, and many others believe it to be a complete waste of money. Here's some reading material for you. Please keep in mind these additives were tested using untreated fuel (not the treated stuff you buy at the pumps) http://www.johnfjensen.com/Diesel_fu...itive_test.pdf

The other thing I would suggest is having your Dad try out a few different additives to see if he notices any improvement in engine noise or fuel mileage. If he can find an additive that pays for itself in fuel mileage then it's a win / win situation.

Personally, you can put me in the Uses an additive column.

So Chris, out of curiosity, what are you using?

I think, along with the great info you posted, he is looking for recommendations. I'm sort of wondering the same thing myself......

Thanks!!!!

So, I just happened to notice, I have over 100 posts, and now I'm a "senior user"!! If that doesn't make one feel old!! Oh well, I have my DP Tuner to keep me young!!!

I use fuel that is treated with 2% Soy bio which was rated highest on that test. And in the winter it is treated to -30° so I never use additive, but I do keep a bottle of DK 911 in the truck during the winter.

Bio is my favorite also, but I'll run whatever percentage I can find. I've run everything from B5 up to B99.

I haven't been that picky with my choice in additives. I usually go with Stanadyne, Howes, or Diesel Kleen depending on what's available. I've seen the FPPF somewhere and plan on trying it, if I can remember where I saw it. I've also been toying with the idea of giving Shaeffers products a try.

One thing I can tell you is both Stanadyne and Diesel Kleen bottles leak once you break the seal, so you have to keep them upright after you use them the first time. The Howe's bottle is thicker and the cap actually seals the liquid inside the bottle. I don't know why that's such a hard concept for some to grasp. Many members here have gone to pouring their additive in other containers they have bought to keep it from leaking.

If you took a poll, I'd venture to guess DK is the most widely used here due to it's availability.

I use DK when my funds allow me to do so. But not very often anymore. I got real nervous when I lost the o-rings shortly after the introduction of ULSD, but have had no issues since. I really noticed no difference in mpg when using DK, and I'm so hard of hearing that any difference in engine noise I would not notice anyway.

I have always used an additive since 1986.in every tank in all my diesels. My 1986 6.9
f250 had 385,00 on it when I replaced the injectors. The mechanic at the IH place could not believe it. My 99 7.3 now has 312,000 still has original injectors.
Right now I am using a 50/50 blend of the grey bottle of Diesel Kleen and Havoline 2 stroke mix. Milage has improved , motors are quieter. I use this in my Dmax, PSD and diesel jetta

That's good to hear. My factory injectors only have 256k on them, so I guess there's still some life in them yet.

I'm not registered over there so I can't see the link. Is this the same one I posted a link to earlier? Someone posted a pdf version a few months back that I bookmarked. If it's not the same one, I'd like to read it.

97Squarebody,
I use B-20 when I can get it but, if I have to full up with ULSD I'll add 18 oz. of 2 stroke oil. Being from Kalifornia you should be able to get B-5, B-20 or some other blend of biodiesel. I would give that a try B 4 I'd spend extra for an additive. You can go the the following link and find a bio station close to home:

Anyone have any thoughts on how we could actually put some sulphur back into the fuel? Is it even do-able.
