I have a 4 place drive on/off Thule trailer that is about two years old. Today I found 1 wheel that was not stoping I adjusted the brakes and still the same results. After pulling the hub on that wheel I found that it was wet from grease. So now I know I need to do all of the seals and also the shoe's and magnet on the one wheel. The trailer dealer cant get just the shoes for about a week but he has the complete backing plate ( shoes hardware and magnet ) in stock for both sides. So do I wait for the needed parts or bite the bullet and go for about $ 260.00 for all 4 complete kits plus seals or will the other magnets last me a while? I have this in my driveway now and don't want to deal with it again in another few month so my thinking is just do it. I just need some coaching to do the complete job (so she doesnt yell)
I'm a firm believer in "If it aint broke ,dont fix it" I would repair the wheel that is messed up and leave the others alone and spend the extra money for fuel. If the brake shoes are not destroyed try cleaning them good in gasoline and cleaning the
hub up and run them.
Some years back I owned several large mack dump trucks and if we blew a wheel seal,We would do just as I mentioned on them and never had any problems. If the brake shoes are worn badly then replace them but other than that I would run them.
Don't use gas for cleaning the brake shoes...it's too expensive...brake clean works fine, and sand the shoes and drum. Sometimes your local NAPA or other parts stores will have your seal in stock (match number off old seal) Another supplier I have dealt with and recommend is Marksrv.com home page in NY. Great service. Like 99 says, if it ain't broke.
Thanks for the thoughts. I replaced the 0ne backing plate complete. ( shoes spring and magntet ) Go to adjust the brakes and no shoe movement. I replaced the wires the same as I took them off and then I find that both wires from the magnet were both going to the hot wire (duh on my part but just wasnt thinking) so I wire one to hot and one to ground and guess what it works now. I should have picked up on they way it came from the factory but S happens. So its fixed and again thanks.
