Fuel pump retainer ring broke...

Hey everyone, been a long time since I asked a question about my own truck...

I smelled gas last Labor Day, and when filling it up, got some spillage on the ground. Assuming it was the evaporative emissions plumbing that sprung a leak, I wasn't too concerned about it.

Well, a few weeks ago, I go poking around with an inspection mirror, and lo-and-behold, find the fuel pump retaining ring broken and the fuel pump flopping around nice and loose.

Was able to hose clamp a piece of the ring back in place, and it kept it from going anywhere, but now I am faced with the task of replacing it.

By dropping the tank and basically doing a fuel pump replacement procedure (disconnecting fuel line and wiring to get the ring on).

I was wondering if anyone ever had this happen to them?

I found a bunch of acorns and branches on top of the tank, so I suspect someone (thing!) tried to chew something they shouldn't have, but can't find any bite marks.

Again, was wondering if anyone else had this problem on their SD?

Part is $20 list from Ford... already got it from a local dealer, just in case it wasn't the right one and wanted to return it easily...

Any reason you can't use a hose clamp as the permanent fix? At least the part is only $20. If you're concerned with squirrels, maybe pick up some hardware cloth you can wire together to form a little fence around the fuel line to keep the critters away.

It screws on like a jar lid - just like the old mason jars.

Can you imagine if I had to have someone else do the work and actually PAY them to do it?

We're talking the same amount of work that goes into a fuel pump replacement.

Thing is, there's no space for a squirrel to fit - it had to be a mouse, rat, something pretty small to get up there...

Well it sounds more like somethings been bumping into the line torquing the pump causing your lid to break than it does chewing on it. Since there's evidence of something hanging around up there I'd either get a cat, or when you drop the fuel tank, cover the bottom side of the bed with duct tape. Then when the tank is re-installed shoot some of that expanding foam between the tank and the bed. You'll need to tape off the pump and lines too. The foam should keep the critters out, and if they try to get in anyway, it should leave some evidence on the ground you can spot. The duct tape will keep the foam from gluing the tank in there permanently so you can drop it again if need be.
