Went out to the junkyard today and found another douglas nash overdrive/underdrive combo unit. Was on the back of a c6 tranny coupled to a 400m in a 78 f150. Paid a hundred bucks, and took it home with me. People are just scraping everything they can, I would buy many of the trucks that are being scraped out. At the moment im looling into connecting the unit to the back of my transfercase.
The first overdrive I paid 100 for and sold for 350. I just hope that I can make it work on my f250.
try this web site i bought parts from them in the past. they bought out doug nash years ago and still sell parts for this same unit. U.S. Gear Corporation Home Page
The unit I found today is different then the other unit unit. This has a high low range with a slider button, and is much smaller than the other unit. The first unit I found was hugh compared to this one. The Wiring is also a lot more complicated.
I think a double overdrive would be great!
At the moment with 285/75/16 Im pushing roughly 55 at 2000 rpms, its great for pulling but traveling to pick up loads is slow going.
Im not really sure what gearing I have, but I believe its 3.55. Off the line its pretty slow. but once going its not to bad.
Yall giving me ideas, Im going to go to the pull a part today and look under every truck/van out there and see if I might get lucky and find a magic box. Never know what someone scraped out for salvage.
guess it's time for me to ask an ignorant question here. do the units work with a 4x4 as well? where would they bolt up to, transfer case or between tranny and transfer case? also, is there any indication in the cab like a lever or switch that would be obvious? the yards here are kind of rough on the body crawling around under vehicles and they're not too polite about lifting them up just so I can take a look-see.
If they replace the tail housing (I'll bet they do) they are only good for the 2wd or 4wd trans. they were made for, not interchangeable.
You could use a 2wd unit and then a divorced x-case and get splits in 2 and 4 wd. if your wheelbase is long enough to fit it all. The trick thing is to locate the div. x-case so that the drivelines front and rear are the same length and have 3 of them made. Then you have a spare that works on either end. Of course you have to match the front end and rear end yokes. That's easy on a 1-ton, not so easy on a 3/4 ton.
The first dne2 that I found was on a 86 f250 that had been converted to a duelly. That was the first clue. I looked under the truck and saw the overdrive as well as the button in the cab on the shifter. When I popped the hood I found a 6.9 turbo diesel, I bought the turbo system for 50 bucks! The second unit I found while walking around looking at the old trucks. I sat in the cab of a 78 and looked at the column shifter and saw a dne engagement button. Found the unit tucked neatly underneath. At the moment I am looking into bolting the unit on the back of my transfercase. It looks like it will bolt up if I remove the tailshaft housing. I cant remember who told me this, but someone said that the output shaft of a c6 is the same as the output shaft of a zf5. Im not sure but Im going to try and find out. If it doesnt work Ill probably put it up for sale just like the other one. Look for trucks set up to tow. Both of my units came off of supercabs with gooseneck hitches.
okay, that answers the question about 2x4 or 4x4. i've got enough on my plate now that don't have time to start another mechanical project. working on trackhoe that decided to start running hot and now the dozer alternator isn't charging. ARRRRRGHHHH! think i'll just go to bed and wake up and it will have been a bad dream. LOL
Gear Vendors replaces the transmission output housing on two wheel drive trucks.
On 4x4 trucks it replaces the rear half of the transfer case.
It only works in two wheel drive.
US Gear mounts behind the transmission.
On 4x4 trucks it mounts between the transmission and transfer case.
So US Gear does work in 4x4.
But the install is much more difficult, relocate transfer case cross memeber, and transfer case shift linkage has to be modified.
I could see where an under drive unit might be of value in 4x4, but overdrive in 4x4?
